Changing Wheels

Can someone please help me ASAP! I'm trying to paint the brake calipers to my X3 and for some strange reason I am not able to take off the wheel. Is there some sort of ritual that is needed to take the wheels off...other then removing the bolts? It's a good thing I found this out in my garage and not on the road.

Please help!!!!

Kick them off! (i'm not kidding)

BigO1120 08-05-2006 12:06 AM

You mean just kick them and they'll come off?

iop9000 08-05-2006 12:08 AM

yes, make sure all bolts are off too, and proper jacking procedure is done

iop9000 08-05-2006 12:09 AM

btw, what color for the calipers? pls post some pics, GL

All that has been taken care of. I tried using a malet on the tires to try and loosen the wheel but the freakin' thing looks like it's stuck kind of tight! I'll give it another shot and see what happens.

Hang tight!!!

THANKS!!!!!!

It worked!!! A couple of more wacks with the malet and the wheel came off.

THANKS A LOT!!!!!!!

Go at the inside of the wheel and the hub with a wire brush if you can to clean some of the dust and rust off while you can, bro.

Post pics when you're all finished!

Good Morning,

The calipers have been painted red! Pics are coming so please bear withe me. It took me about 2 -3 hours (starting at 12am) to paint the calipers but it really makes the X3 look sportier. I was going to buy some new calipers but said to myself...let me paint them first and see how they look.

I never knew how much of a B!TCH it can be taking those tires off. Good thing I found out how to do it at home in my garage. THANKS iop9000 for the great, yet simple, advise of using some extra force on the tires.

The pics are coming!!!

If you put a little lithium grease on the hubcentric, you'll find that they will come off right awat without a mallet next time.

also what product and how did you do it.. did you blue tape aroudn it?? is it a spray? how d o it .. it owuld look on my X casue i got the wheels that show my calipers really well

Rick in Prescott 08-06-2006 12:52 PM

You need a spell check. Just take a little tube of lithium grease and spread it LIGHTLY on the back side of the wheel (where it makes contact with the hub). Be sure to put a little on the hub of the wheel (the round opening that makes contact with the hubcentric on the hub). If you don't over do the grease your pretty calipers will be fine.

I think he was asking how the calipers were painted and what product was used to paint them....

Right, calipers. Got it.
It's most likely easier to remove the calipers, (only a few bolts) and paint them loose. Just don't un-do the brake lines for obvious reasons.

just get the brush on kit by Duplicolor, less mess

What's up everyone!?!? Sorry for not getting back to you guys...had a long weekend!

I was at my brother-in-law's house smoking some good stuff :D when gave me the idea of painting my calipers red. After finishing our stash I spent the next 3 hours (at 12am on a Friday night) taking off the wheels (which were a B!TCH) and painting each caliper with a brush.

Now...being the fact that I was high as a kite I didn't want to attempt to remove the brake calipers so I painted them while they were still on the rotor. I did tape up the surrounding area and I do believe that I used Duplicolor as the product of choice.

After all was done the calipers are painted and I have to say that it does give the X3 a sportier look. I took it out for a spin and I have to say that I've noticed a lot of folks looking down at my wheels and one person even complimented on how it looked when I stopped at a local mall.

Again the pics are coming! I know :worthless: Please hang with me!!

BigO1120 08-11-2006 10:45 AM

Hey guys!!! So sorry about the delay but my camera broke so I'm waiting for me brother to lend me his so I can take the pics. I'm going to clean my wheels before I take the pics though because I think they'll stand out more.

I regards to doing them on a leased X3...I really don't think they could make a big stink about it. I mean...it makes the X3 look much better.

They're coming guys!!!!!!!!! So Sorry!!!!!!!!!
