BMW Assist Recall on 2006 X3?
 

My wife took our X3 in today for the 1 yr service. They told her the BMW assist has a recall and it might take until tomorrow to fix it/replace it. The SAV has been perfect in the first year, other than the NAV being off by 100 feet. We are turning off the freeze warning chime (for the 2nd time) and getting the automatic 3 blink turn signal feature turned on again (they messed those 2 up when we had the keys coded the first time to lock the doors when I drive but to leave them unlocked when my wife drives--she doesn't like to unlock the doors from the dash).

Anyone know of what problem there is with 2006 BMW assist?

My wife just called to tell me that the 2007 530i with 5 miles on it that she is driving as a loaner is the nicest car she has ever driven. Hope I get to drive it back to the dealer tomorrow to pick up the X3. :) :thumbup:

The 530i is a great car and she may want to keep it over the X3.

How do I get that feature turned on? Is that something only the dealer can do? Or is there a program like in the VW/Audi world such as VAG-COM where you can do these changes?

As far as I know, only the dealer can program the turn signal auto blink to be active. The default is "off" on the 2006 X3, I believe. See your manual.

And the 530i is just a fine automobile. I need to figure out the idrive for the nav. We will probably have the loaner over the whole weekend. The service advisor told my wife it was a hassle to replace the BMW assist module. Not sure if that is the same as the bluetooth module, but I will talk to the service folks tomorrow in daylight. Wife likes the 530i better than the X3. So do my children. She has good taste in driver's cars. She loves the acceleration from stoplights. Now I want to go on Deal or No Deal so I can get an M5.

Yep. The recall is for the bluetooth module. My wife had stopped using it since no one could hear her. We shall see if the replacement has better sound quality.

It turns out that my navigation unit is shot, too. It has been off by 100 feet, which can cause you to miss some turns (tells you to turn after you have passed the road/intersection/exit.) But they have to wait until Monday for the new nav unit to arrive, so we will have the 530i loaner for at least another 2 days, maybe 3. It is so much faster than the X3. I hope we get a new set of map CD's with the new nav. Will let you folks know.

Does the dealer charge you to have that feature turned on or can you just ask for it when you bring it in for service?

My dealer told us to drive the SAV for a month or so after purchase and figure out what key settings to change. We did that, but they put my wife's key setting on my key. She didn't want to have my color key tag, since it would have been simple to just exchange keys, right? When we got the keys changed back they somehow reset the auto blink feature to off and put the freeze chime back on. No charge from my dealer for any of these things. According to the manual, you can have the doors lock at a variety of vehicle speeds, but my dealer's key software doesn't do this, for some reason. I would hope that when you bring yours in for service they won't charge you. You never know 'til you ask. Once you've had that auto blink feature you never go back. The 530i loaner has it on and we REALLY missed it on the X3 the last few months.

What is the "auto blink" feature?

We have the best of both worlds,the MY 2005 530i and the MY2006 X3 and enjoy both of them equally in there own right.
We just came back from a trip to FLA. in the 530i, 2,780 miles,it was great.

Starting in 2006 the X3 can be programmed to have the turn signals blink 3 times to indicate a lane change. You just hold the turn signal level down before the click and it automatically blinks 3 times. It will never blink less than 3 times with this option turned on. On the 3 and 5 series there is no "click" for continuous blinking of the turn signal, but the auto blink occurs with holding the lever down a short period of time. I would give you the page number where you can look this up in the X3 manual, but the manual is in the X3 and the X3 is STILL at the dealer, since the Navigation unit is not arriving until tomorrow.

Neighbors asked my wife about her "new car" when she drove our daughter to school. She said, "Oh, it's just my Loaner!" She got a big kick out that. The 530i loaner doesn't have the navigation DVD, unfortunately (dealer kept it) , and the X3 nav DVD doesn't work in the 530i. On the other hand, I found the iDrive, really simple to learn and use, and my wife really likes it. Go figure. Kids like the X3 better, since it's easier for them to see out. They also like the panorama roof better than the comparatively small sunroof in the 5.

Interesting X3 review at AutoWeek. They like it now. It's as if they haven't driven an X3 since 2004.
