Going in for service today. . .here's my list:

2005 X3, 25,000 MILES--feel free to post comments:
  • STEERING MAKES SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN TURNING THROUGH SLOW TURNS (i.e. DRIVEWAY, PARKING LOT, ETC.)
  • DRIVER SIDE WINDOW IS SOMETIMES SLOW TO RISE. IT USUALLY WILL NOT GO UP ALL THE WAY IF YOU CLOSE THE WINDOWS FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR THROUGH THE DOOR LOCK SYSTEM. IT WILL ALSO OCCASIONALLY GO DOWN WHEN IT IS DOWN HALFWAY AND YOU PULL THE SWITCH ALL THE WAY UP (TO ROLL IT UP AUTOMATICALLY).
  • BLOWER FAN IS AUDIBLE (TICKING NOISE) WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STANDING POSITION WITH THE CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM RUNNING.
  • WHEN COASTING IN REVERSE (AFTER NOT DRIVING FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, OVERNIGHT, ETC.), ENGINE SEEMS TO NEARLY STALL OR HESITATE—SIMILAR TO THE FEELING OF RUNNING OUT OF GASOLINE.

That one's pretty original! Let us know how you make out!

Try a little silicon on the window seals. They could be dirty and the windows are not free to move up and down. The same mechanism raises the window regards of where you activate it.

Don't coast backwards. Or maybe you have a clogged fuel filter?

You have three minor issues at 25k miles. I wouldn't worry to much about those. That's what a warranty is for.

Thanks for your replies--I agree that these are minor issues and nothing to be too concerned about. I orginally went in because of the squeaky steering wheel. They told me it was not a matter of topping off the power steering fluid, but possibly a problem with the seal in the steering column. So, I decided to make a "wish list" before going back. They did tell me that they were going to replicate my experience by letting it sit overnight and having the tech drive it first thing in the morning.

Hopefully my loaner will not be the only vehicle that would be a disappointment: an X3 2.5.

Will keep you posted. . .

  • STEERING MAKES SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN TURNING THROUGH SLOW TURNS (i.e. DRIVEWAY, PARKING LOT, ETC.) This is a common complaint with X5's as well. My wife complains about the birds chirping in the steering column. ;) I think it's a design issue so the best they can do is to lube it with silicone for a temporary fix.

There are many posts regarding this on the E46 forums. My 330 use to pulse RPM's up and down in neutral after reversing, sometimes stalling. I haven't seen it since I replaced the input cam position sensor a few months ago but that could just be a coincidence.

Don't forget to ask them to rotate the air in your tires... :D

Juan, didn't you know as of 2005 all BMW's had Long Life air in the tires?:nanana:

SERVICE UPDATE:

Dropped off the car last night and drove around the lot with the tech. He acknowledged the squeaky steering sound and admitted that it is VERY common in X5's, but this was the first he had heard it in the X3. Getting fixed today. Also, they informed me of a Bluetooth recall on my X--who knows, maybe my Samsung non-compatable phone will work now? No promises.

LOANER: 2007 White/Tan 328xi, 7 miles on odometer (tried to pair my bluetooth phone and it worked right away)

Oh yeah, one other thing, $1185 for 100,000 miles extended full maintenance through Erhard BMW of Bloomfield Hills. Sounds VERY reasonable, considering a full brake job is probably 800.

The coasting in reverse thing... Do you start the car, maybe move it a short distance, then shut the car off almost immediately and then re-start it?

I hear that the 2007 x5 has helium for better mpg;)

Drives like its floating on air:rofl:

White X3: No restarting or anything unusual. Just a hesitation. They did not detect it in the first service call. Maybe next time. They are also replacing everything to do with the phone, bluetooth, TCU technology as part of a recall. You might want to check this out.

FYI

What did they find with the hesitation? I have the issue when it gets to higher RPM's, like when I go into passing gear.

Thanks
