07 3.0si Oil Filter

I'm trying to locate the oil filter on our 07 x3 and either I'm completely blind or its changed from the 06 and older. I had an 02 x5 3.0 and changed the oil in it many time. I've many posts about changing the oil in the x3, but it really seems that something has changed on the 07 models.

Any ideas?????

It's located underneath the big round black cap at the front of the engine.

That's what I thought but didn't want to tear into it until I knew for sure. Is there a special tool to open and tighten that cap or is it just hand tight?

Just curious. Why would you want the TEAR into an 07 x3

Maybe he's already put 7500 miles or so on the vehicle.........and don't start another 15k versus 7.5k oil change interval discussion.

Yes, the car has 7,500 miles on it and I wanted to change the oil. I agree.......NO MORE oil change arguments................

I called the dealer and there is a special tool for this new cap......$43 ......... What was wrong with the 36mm socket????? Guess they wanted to sell a new tool now that we all own the socket...........

Absolfookinlutely amazing to me.

A proprietary oil filter wrench.

The mfg'ers have lost their minds.

Meanwhile, good move on the 7.5k mile change, Derek.

Found the part: #83300493936

The local dealer wanted $43 but Turner will sell it for $27. Circle has it for $25.50.

Wow! The oil filter is easily accessible on the top of the engine! That's awesome!

It always has been in recent BMWs. Now, the '07s are missing the dipstick........:loco: but I guess BMW deems that to be progress.

I have the same engine on my new CPO 530xit, but haven't done an oil change yet. I plan on going the shade tree mechanic route on my first change. I'll hand tighten to contact, then give it an additional 3/4 to full turn. The spec is only 25 NM or 18.8 ft-lbs. With an o-ring, hand tightening should be sufficient. If not, that's when I'll go and buy a wrench. My old trusty filter strap should be enough to remove it.

Autozone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto carry them - would probably set you back 6 bucks or so if I am not mistaken it measures 76mm in diameter and is a 14 flute oil cap/filter tool, or here its $2.99+ whatever shipping would be
