X3 Folding Exterior Mirrors?
To All,
I know its common in europe and japan to have the exterior mirrors fold in. Is this an easy option to add, as I would like it on my Australian delivered X3 but it never came with it....... Anyone?? Regards Rod. |
I don't think its easy, since you'd need to install the switch and the folding mechanism. I have this feature and while it's useful in tight spots, it's not worth the expense of retrofitting it.
|
The folding option comes together with the electronic anti-dazzling feature (when the mirror gets darker when people behind you have strong lights). It might be easier to get the whole package than to just get the motors to fold them. I would also not recommend to do it, as the effort and cost to do it would not cover the small feature it brings.
|
how would you know if you had this feature? How would you go about activating it?

...and the button it is. There is no automatic system to close the mirrors, nor any Key settings, for our car.
The newer cars with iDrive do have the configuration setting in the menu that allows to configure when the mirrors are closed down or whatever. On the other hand, it's the mess of the iDrive menu, not a simple button like ours. |

This certainly doesn't work on the 2006 X3. If I hold the key in the keyhole (or keep pressing the buttons on the key), the windows and sunroof will automatically open or close, but the mirrors don't move at all. The only way to move them is by pressing the small square button next to the mirror adjustment cursor and the windows open/close buttons on the driver's door.
I hope it's different on the 2007 :) |
Can you elaborate on what combination/sequence to do this? I'm curious now to see of my 2006 X3 can do it!
BTW, just dropped it for service this morning because of the dreaded "Passenger Air Bag Off" light. My SA decided that since it was close to the service interval (1500 miles) so he'll do the full service today also. I was given a 530 xi touring as a loaner (and hoping that they need to keep the X3 for maybe a day or two more!)!! Talk about spoiling me! |
there should be a tiny square-ish button next to the side mirror switch above the window controls
|
On your key, you have three buttons. Open, close, and trunk. If you press and hold open, the car will open, and after some seconds all windows and the sunroof will open. Same for close. The doors close, and then the windows and sunroof.
This setting is configurable by the dealer. If it doesn't work with your key, you can ask the dealer to configure it (maybe $$$). Again, on my 2006, the mirrors don't move. The only way to make them move is to press the small square button on the driver's door. |
is this the same selector switch for adjusting the side mirrors? I'm confused!
 |
it should be next to that switch in the blank area to the left
if your side mirrors aren't self dimming, then i think you don't have this option |
Ohh, then I DON'T have it! LOL no wonder it didn't work!
 |
if i recall...it was a $250 option for just the power folding
|
xnsf said it right. Folding mirrors and auto-dimming comes together in the same option package.

My old 1999 328i had the ability to open the windows and sunroof with the remote. So the new US models can't do that?
|
I was under the impression that the auto dimming/folding side mirrors were no longer offered as an option after MY04.

To close, you must use the key in the door. |
