Reflections on our new X3
Picked up our new X3 this weekend. This replaces the 325xi for my wife, but I get to drive it sometimes.
2007, X3 3.0si, Alpine White. Black leather, dark ash. Premium package, Activity Package, PDC, and Servotronic steering. We special-ordered it to get the 6 speed manual transmission. Traded the Z4 (got a great price), and sold the 325xi privately to the first person that responded from Craigslist. We still have the X5 3.0 for a couple of months, until the 535 arrives in October, so comparisons between the two X models are easily made right now. As this is a Canadian model, it is not identical to the US build. In the above build, we get Xenon, heated front seats, cargo divider, no garage door opener, cold weather package (except for the heated rear seats), privacy glass, heated steering wheel, and premium sound, as far as I can tell from looking at the US web site. Pretty much a loaded X3, except no nav, and no M Sport. First impressions:

Glad to hear you're enjoying the new X3 so far. The engine should break-in better after a few thousand miles. Fuel consumption should decrease over the next 16,000km and soon the engine will rev more willingly.

JCL,
PM sent. thanks |
congrats on the new purchase!
i thought there was a dipstick...just very hidden at the very back of the engine bay. (not sure) :dunno: |
Like you said, any day with a new car is a good day. Enjoy! :)

Congratulations and enjoy your new car!

Congrats on your new X3! I'm on my second and for whatever it's worth:
- I agree that the 07's are nice. My '06 is light years ahead of my original '04 (unfortunately got the 2.5i for my '04 and it was way underpowered). My 225hp 3.0 liter feels okay - though I still wish they'd drop the twin turbo in that bad boy and let us all enjoy the fun. - I think the handling actually improved in '06 and continued into '07. My '04 non-sport often times left my kidneys feeling punished but my '06 non-sport is much smoother but still handles as well. I haven't driven an '07 yet but would imagine it to be similar. - I like most of the changes to the '07 but like my '06 just fine. If possible, I would look to combine some of both. - I haven't had any leaks or rattles with either sunroof to date and I love the extra air provided by the giant opening. - The engine (IMO) should loosen up a bit with usage as the tranny and engine adapt to your driving style - or your driving style adapts to the engine. Still, the X3 never feels "small" so much as not "huge" like an X5 feels to me. - The opening for the hitch was original in '04 and '05 and went away in '06. They brought it back for '07 and it's nice because you no longer have to CUT the plastic in the back! :dunno: - I too worry about some of the modern conveniences (no dip stick, computer controlled, etc.) and the giant "DO NOT TOUCH" sign on, around and concerning the engine. Sometimes, I'm a bit surprised we owners even are allowed to pop the hood! Again, congrats on the new ride and definitely post after you've given it some miles. It's nice to contrast and compare initial thoughts to long-term results. |
interesting...
I don't see any do not touch signs under the hood of my 07.
But, it's interesting that the oil filter housing has a sealed what looks to be a "paint line" on it. Sort of like sealing a letter with wax so you know if it was opened or something along those lines. I suppose to tell if it has been opened, but who knows. Have I mentioned the Navigation system really sucks... How I wish I would have listened to the sales guy who told me not to get it.... |
JCL,
Congrats on your new ride and excellent write-up per your usual...I look at X3s a lot as I daydream about what to get when we finally toss our '01 X5, though there is no time pressure. It is on my list, but it needs a few visual things, imo. All the X3s at the local hillbilly stlr are loaded with soccer mom stuff, and/or weird colors, all autos and, all non-sport. And, while they sit there collecting dust, the sales punques talk about $500 off as if they are treating me like a charity case, lol! Good to read you are nearly mended and your CEO is on the mend! We have owned our X3 for about two weeks now. My wife has now gone through a tank of gas!! Going to the mountains tomorrow so we will have more thoughts the middle of next week.
So far absolutely no problems (except for the leasing process!!) and I love the way it handles and accelerates. The automatic is smooth, responsive and a joy. Lets hope that notion stays!! The X3 is Montego Blue and looks great in the prairie sun. More to follow DD |
Thanks for your informative review- Congrats on the new car!
I'll say a bit about our '07 X3, but I don't spend much time in it at all. The interior is small. It is. There isn't much room in there. It is "cozy" though. Nice sunroof. very dated center stack, but good materials. Good driving dynamics, but it dosen't always feel like it has 270 hp. Large trunk. No alarm, kinda a letdown, because most 20K cars have them. I believe in them, they definately get noticed by police in my town. Good ride, sometimes harsh, but usually not. Great color combo (it's platinum bronze/Tobacco leather/ light poplar wood) Lovely exterior design. Navi sucks. We shouldn't have gotten it. Confident in messy weather, good xDrive system and DSC. A good step between a 328xiT and a X5. It fits right between them, but is the oldest. No door [EDIT: Seat] mounted side airbags. (very 90's....not as safe) No dual climate control. (c'mon, bmw....) No rear HVAC. I have been told passengers complain a lot. It gets really cool (or hot) in front, though. Very stable at extra legal speeds. Servotronic is nice. Overall, a decent car. Would I buy another? No. There is a huge difference between the 3 Series/X3 and 5 Series/X5 and higher class BMW's. (also, I might add, the transmission is a nightmare. The TSB fix was perfect though, and it is trouble free.) :) |

No rear side airbags and I'm told that's for child safety - so if kids fall asleep in the back seat (certainly not when I'm driving!) they won't get hurt by the airbag itself. I'm not totally sure about that one though because I would still think an airbag would be better than the grill of another vehicle. Dual climate control I find to be . . . not as useful. My new 3 has it as did my older 5 and the differences were almost unnoticable. I do agree that the back seat needs HVAC though. Freeze/fry in the front and then fry/freeze in the back. Handling on snow and ice is phenomenal! I was cruising by everything else on the road and was able to make it up my steep hill when Subarus, trucks and assorted other vehicles filled the space along the curb. Unfortunate that your X3 doesn't fit your needs. I'm on my second and will certainly consider another one when it's time to move on - though that new 1 series has caught my boss' eye! |

Please kkep in mind that for the 2006 you DON'T need to cut the black filler part, just buy the appropiate one and replace it. Actually, the parts diagram shows a couple of different parts when you put the hitch on.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...43&hg=51&fg=15 Parts 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9 are related to the hitch. Regards, |

mwbbmw: No, the X3 fits our needs just fine, but coming from BMW's higher class vehicles, it is kinda a disappointment. If this was my first BMW, I would be thrilled. But it's just not engineered to the same level as the X5. |

lol...we forgive you. Actually I'm not 100% sure what made everybody switch to seat mouted (besides the reasons i listed).....maybe they didn't want the airbag deploying towards you, so they had it deploy to the side of you?
I remember reading a manual of a rental car that had door mounted and it said not to place you arm in the door armrest during a side collision...lol |

Well we got home from our trip to the Canadian Rockies in our new 07 X3. Some observations:
Mileage = 24 MPG (US) at 75 MPH with five adults - not too shabby! Front and back seats very comfortable with the exception of the middle back (no surprise) Could have used rear air - particularly with the oversized moonroof. Vehicle held the road like a true sportscar - I was amazed! This X3 is one fun car to drive on the curvy mountain terrain. Speed, and availablility of more speed, was also amazing - it was like driving with a lone occupant. Room to fit three average sized and two oversized suitcases. The X3 trunk looks small but you can fit a lot in. No issues with the tranny - still shifts with no problems. Love the MP3 reading stereo - bored the three adult children with my 150 song 70's selection of music (LOL) All in all I am still very happy with this purchase. Too bad it's my wife's car and I only get to drive it on road trips! |
Great thread:thumbup: I'm planning on getting a 3.0d for the CEO, that is if all goes well with selling the MB SLK350.
