Need new tires
 

I need to buy new tires for my '06 x3. I currently have Bridgestone Turanzas. I have 235/55 r17 size tires. Has anyone tried the Eagle F1 tires? I think the Turanzas are really good tires, but it is a fairly noisy ride. Any other suggestions?

Go for the Pirelli Scorpion STRs. They're one of the factory-issue ones (ours had it) and they're fairly excellent. Way better than the Turanzas, which often receive complaints from X3 owners for poor ride and noise quality.

I have Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric tires on another car. The tires are good. When the temperature is in the 30's F (less than 5 C) and it is rainy, the tires are not too grippy. When it's in the high 40's, they are very grippy. If you get Eagle F1 Asymmetrics and live where it's slightly cold, consider getting snow tires, too.

Note that there are several Eagle F1 tires. The Eagle F1 GS-D3 is previously the top of the line (or top of the line for most cars). It is now the wet weather optimized tire. The Eagle F1 All Season is the all season model. The Eagle F1 Asymmetric is the dry weather optimized tire. There are a few other Eagle F1 but they are in only a few sizes, I think.

Asymmetrics are made in Germany. GS-D3 are made in Germany, People's Republic of China (not to be confused with the Republic of China on Taiwan), and Thailand.

In short, the Asymmetrics are good summer performance tires.

For comparison and for you to assess my tire experience, I have driven on Pirelli P6 4Seasons (mediocre plus, in my opinion), Yokohama AVS Intermediate (very good, not quite as good as F1 Asymmetrics and also discontinued), Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus (Grandma tires, decent, nothing special, expensive), Bridgestone Blizzak WS50 (discontinued in 2008) and WS60 (very good snow tires, WS50 seems a bit better in snow but ride is worse than the WS60).

I only had about 4k miles of drive time with the factory pirelli scorpion strs which had about 4/32nds left but had a previous plug that was leaking, so i bought a set of pirelli pzero neros...gotta say ride quality is noticeably better (less stiff over bumps) and much quieter. My other choice were the continental contiprocontacts, about the same price, but ive seen continentals wear and they seem like they wear quick. Also i liked the fact that the pirellis wore evenly. I highly recommend the pirellis :thumbup:

Don't bother with anything other than the Scorpion STRs, or maybe the P-Zero Neros (assuming you're looking for all season tires -)

Use the 'Search' function, this has been discussed alot. The Scorps are far and away the most synergistic choice for the X3. I've got them on my '04, been thru a couple good winters here in Santa Fe, they've been simply excellent- very good day-to-day, great handling, good ride, quiet, very good in wet, very good in snow, wearing well (I've got 40K on mine, will replace next fall). The car likes these tires, & vice versa.

My new X3 cme with Dunlop SP's and I can verify that they are quiet and hold the road very well and give confidence and harsh conering whilst at speed.

I wanted to thank everyone for their recommendations. I went for the Pirelli P Zero Nero M + S. At $118 per tire, good reviews and reputation of Pirelli tires in general it was a fairly easy choice. The scorpion str's had quite a few negative comments on TireRack, and while there were good reviews as well i went with the p zero's for the all season usability.

Keep us posted on the Pirelli's on the X3--I have them on my Z4 and think they are great....How is the ride and handling compared to the scorpions??
