Fuel MPG

Here is a good question for the group on fuel MPG. At what average speed will the 3.0 X3 get the best MPG? I understand driving conditions, habbits, style make all the diff. I know someone has studied this. So at what speed, lets say highway driving (In my case the Autobahn)gets the best MPG? Thanks

80 mph - 23 mpg - 2700 rpm ?

Good question! My small sample and casual observation revealed about 23 MPG at 80 mph (about 2700 rpm) on a flat stretch in my X3 3.0 which has only 2500 total miles.

I really don't know what the best speed would be for the best MPG. My wife's X3 is currently averaging about 19 MPG, but hers is mostly city driving.

How much do you guys on the average get on the X5 in city driving conditions

Boston X5 4.4 09-01-2005 02:02 PM

13-15 in all city driving
but I have a lead foot, as attested to by getting ~14-17 in my previous manual 330CI

I got a good 23/Hwy on a recent trip doing 75-80 on some pretty flat 2-laners through Texas and Oklahoma. I'm struggling to get 14.5-15 in town here. Fort Worth was recently rated as one of the worst on traffic light synchronization. On main roads with 15 cars in a pack you stop for 1-3 minutes at almost every light to let 1-3 cars on the main drag. I just sigh as I watch the mpg reading go down, down, down... :tsk:

I get 17-18 MPG on a combination of both highway and city driving. Just as Boston said, though, I have a HEAVY lead foot. I hardly ever do anything below 85 on the highway.

I don't even own an X5 but I'll share anyway :D

According to the OBC in the 330xi, I average 21.6 or so.. Not too high, but I do a good amount of stop-and-go driving andI have to go up a lot of hills.. I live on one, and my school is on one. On the highway I've seen between 27-32mpg at around 85.. Not too bad.

Yes...when you have kids...you can tell them...When I was your age I had to drive to school everyday up a hill, both ways.

For comparison's sake, here's our experience with my wife's X3. It only has about 1,500 miles on it so the fuel consumption will probably continue to improve, but we've been thrilled with its performance to date.

We have the 2.5 X3 with Steptronic Auto (a no-cost option in Canada). Currently, with 100% city driving, it is getting 21.5 miles/U.S. gallon (or about 11L/100 KM). It's a sweet little ride and already three or four of my neighbors are beginning to think about getting one, which is interesting considering the X5 is the SUV of choice in my neighborhood (there must be 30-40 of them within a few block radius of me). I'm looking forward to seeing what the X-Drive will do when the snow flies and I'm on my way to the mountains to ski :D
