and that just proves that you shouldn't believe everything a dealer tells you.
Let me guess at what happened. You tried to start the X3 and let off the key before the motor caught. So, you turned the key back to the start position and the car started. However, when you drove, you noticed that the gear shifts were very abrupt, both upshifting and downshifting. Sound familiar? Turn the car completely off, allow the car to sit, restart the car and all is back to normal?
That pretty much describes a recent experience I had in my 2004 X3 3.0. I tend to believe that an error gets thrown (temporarily) when the car fails to start. The error causes the transmission to shift abruptly. If the car fails to catch on the first start, I now remove the key from the ignition, reinsert the key and then attempt to start the car. Have NOT had the problem, again, after following that procedure.
Of course, you could test this theory be deliberately releasing the key, from the start position, before the engine catches. Then try to start the car (without first removing the key) and see how the tranny performs.
