Maybe the first one with a dead water pump?
Well, I've been loosing coolant as of late, but not enough to cause overheating. So this morning I took it in and they say my water pump is out.
Luckily, I already have a water pump that I purchased to put into my 323ci and never did... So i'm going to have that done, but I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and replace the t-stat and hoses too as I believe is the general consensus on the e46 forums. Also, I'm running near 150k miles so I'd rather not push having to redo this mess with the t-stat again soon. |
There aren't a lot of X3s with the mileage that you have, but I think replacing all the parts you mentioned would be a good preventative maintenance measure.

Yeah, I've got some high mileage here. I have to say though that this x3 has been pretty good to me; the e46 was a money pit.

My T-stat just went out at 61K miles on my '04. It took an hour at a very leisurely pace to change it out. I followed the DIY instructions for the E46 M54 (found with a simple google search).

For the sake of a few more pennies, I would definitely change the Tstat whilst the water pump is off. If the hoses are getting hard I would also change them. Good time to do a coolant flush too.

I got the car back the very next morning, they replaced everything for me except the tstat. And I was charged a staggering $800 and this was an indie shop. Oh, well...
The car is running well, I have a code on for the O2 sensors but have yet to replace them. Otherwise, the car is strong and looks to be in very good shape. I think it's def held up better than my e46 coupe. |
Please define 'everything' as $800 seems high for a waterpump...

Hoses, expansion tank, etc. Like I said it was way too high for what they did, but it's too late now. :-/

I'm guessing it was fairly labour-intensive, hence the high costs.
