Rotor thickness on X3?
 

I need to do my front pads and want to see if I have to do the rotors as well.

What is the standard thickness for the front and rear pads, and what is the minimum operating thickness of both fronts and rears?

Minimum thickness will be stamped on the rotor, possibly on the circumference of the hat.

I just change them as a matter of course, for the benefits of improved surface (less noise, better pedal feel) and more thermal mass (better braking performance).

I was kind of hoping I'd get two sets of pads to one set of rotors, but if it needs new ones at the same time, so be it. I ordered some rotors today so I'll check the wear on the ones on the car and replace them if they have more than 40% wear.

you should get at least two sets of pads to one set of rotors. Did the dealer replace one set of pads under the original warranty around 45k?

It is only the US that has prepaid maintenance (unless you purchase it additionally). The OP in Australia, and those of us in Canada, pay for our own brake repairs.

I could have gotten a second life out of my rotors on my X5, but chose not to, for the reasons noted above.

The car has done 105k km in a little over two years, and the sensor light has just come on. I bought new pads for the fronts - they have about 4 or 5mm left from my quick inspection with the wheels still on an the rears look fine. I'm planning on doing the pads this week, and I have new rotors as well. I'll measure the existing rotors and check what they have left.

I know they start at 25mm, so i'll check the minimum size and if they have more than 55% left and they look ok, i'll probably keep them on.

Did the pads and rotors yesterday.

The minimum thickness is 23.4mm on the front rotors. Mine were at 23.6 and 23.58 so i replaced them with new ones.

For completeness, i'll look at the rears today and post the minimum thickness on them as well.

The minimum thickness on the rears is 20.4mm
