Spirited Driving
 

I just wanted to get a better idea of how much wear spirited driving can put on our X's. Mine is at 60K, 2004 3.0.

Occasionally I like to let it reach 100 or 115, for short periods of time. Sometimes i might let it get up to higher revs as well, (say 6 or 7) before I get there.

Considering brakes, engine, suspension, etc is it really that bad to let the car go like that sometimes? This is fully warmed up, and the car is mechanically in good shape.

This is occasionally, the car usually isn't driven hard very often.

No, it is not that bad for the vehicle, but it isn't necessarily safe

Hard braking and hard acceleration cause more wear than occasional high speed, IMO

All my X has known is high spirited driving. Yes you increase the wear and tear, but it's a BMW and built to take on the autoban and get from point a to b as quickly as possible.

Enjoy you X, and besides that 3.0 engine is rev happy it's the only way it will produce and power.

JCL, of course, if going that fast one should always do it in a safe environment far away from others.

The car is built for the autobahn and in my opinion, the suspension/drivetrain performs best when pushed. Of course there's wear-and-tear involved, but these cars are engineered for it.

On certain stretches of highway, I regularly set the cruise control at 140-150km/h (+/-90mph). If the situation calls for it, I don't think twice about 160-170km/h. The only real reason I don't like driving so fast is because the truck guzzles fuel at those speeds and I can't help but think about the CO² emissions. Sad, but true.

I drive a lot on two-lane country roads, and will overtake vehicles at speed. I'll ask for a kickdown (AT) when needed and redline in 2nd and 3rd. I'm impressed the automatic gearbox hasn't quit and still shifts like new after 198.000km (123k miles), although I did do an ATF change back a few years ago.
