Engine Start Button Help

These are the instructions I've been using

E46 DYI:
http://members.shaw.ca/banana_bread/...nestartdiy.htm
E36 DYI:

Ok, so I got as far taking off the panel under the steering wheel. This is what the instruction said next:

"Once all of this is removed, you can pull down which will expose two clips that need to be pulled out to gain access to the wiring. Use a small flat head screwdriver to pull these out, then yank straight down and the plastic piece underneath the steering column should pop out. Don't be afraid to use a little force here. Once this is done, you should see something like this"

Is it that black box around the steering column? Where is the blue/black and green wire? I wasn't able to open the box around the steering column but I found a green and yellow/black wire coming out of the black box. Can I just splice into those wires? How do I test if they are the right wires? The E36 DYI says yellow/black and green wire. Are those it or do I have to get inside that box? I appreciate the help guys. Thanks.

STOP!!!!!!!!!! Do not tap into those wires in your pic...that black box on the steering shaft is your steering angle sensor.

You have to remove the covers on the steering column.

What does the steering angle sensor do? Meassures how much the wheel is turning? While I was messing with it a pin fell out of the box. It was loose and pulled it out. Seems like it was just helping to hold the housing togeather. I didn't get a chance to put it back in.

I gave the car a test drove later and no lights came on. The xenons turn correctly when I make turns. Everything seems normal. What is that pin for?

You need to reinstall that pin. It keeps the steering angle sensor from moving and your DSC module will receive the correct steering wheel position. If it moves and gives a false reading, you will think its Christmas all over again because every light in your cluster will be lit up.

Thanks for all the help rob :) there is a notch on one of the ends. Should the notch end be on bottom of top when I insert the pin?

The notch end should go into the column an the smooth end keeps the sensor fixed.
