Limp Mode ????
 

Hi all, im Zak and new to this forum and would be extremely grateful if anyone can give me some advice on my 2006 diesel X3 Sport.
Purchased the vehicle approx 8 weeks ago and was extremely pleased with it.
Unfortunately in the last week or so when i try to accelerate through 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear there is a definite rev limitation to each gear and it feels as though the engine is in a kind of 'limp mode'. the engine does not exceed 2000, 2500 and 3000 RPM in each respective gear and there are no warning lights on the dash.
I have done a little research and found that the 'diesel particle filter' may need cleaning/changing, but can anyone shed any light on this please with regard of costs etc

Don't know about the DPF, but also consider the fuel filter.

I suggest spending thousands on repairing parts that people guess might be wrong, rather than buying a code reader and checking the fault. Remember a diesel needs a special code reader.

As for the DPF, it's part of the exhaust, similar to the catalytic convertor on a petrol. Some companies offer a replacement where the DPF is removed and the engine software adjusted to prevent warning lights etc. You need to make sure it will get through an MOT.

You could also clean the EGR valve, which I would do first.

You could look into the fuel filter.

I don't know a huge amount about diesels but I do know that you start with the cheapest fixes first.

Blocked or sticking valves or filters may not show up on a code reader since sensors may not be monitoring them for marginal performance.

Get on eBay and buy a copy of the DIS and a cable. You can then read and reset the fault codes. There are lots of faults that won't put a warning light up. It's an essential if your going to maintain and service your X3 yourself.

Regarding cleaning the EGR if that's clogged the inlet manifold will be as well. Not difficult but a horribly dirty job to clean out all the muck. Improved my MPG once I'd cleaned mine
