Need help with Tail light malfunctioning E83

So first a little background regarding my situation...

Last week I removed the dash and replaced the dreaded evaporator. After reassembling everything I am stumped by what seems to me to be a malfunction with the rear tail lights.

On the driver side tail light the lowest light bulb functions as both a tail and brake light. The upper bulb isnt getting power at all (tested with multimeter)

On the pass side both the upper and lower tail light bulbs function as tail lights however when the brakes are applied the upper bulb functions as a brake light. That means 2 seperate bulbs are functioning as my tail lights and stop lights.

I have replaced the bulbs and sanded the contacts and still the same functioning. I have also replaced the light control module with no changes and also disconnected the battery for 20 minutes. Any ideas would be appreciated Thanks

I'm not sure this will be helpful, but the set up described on the passenger side is the correct way for it to function.

The taillights on most German vehicles are cross-wired and configured so that if the main brakelight fails, there will be a backup brake light.

So the problem is that your normal left brake light (upper one) is not getting any power which is triggering the fault and thus prompting the bottom light to act in its stead......all I can say is make sure there's no corrosion and the bulbs are good. :dunno:

check e53 x5 forum

this has been done over and over in the X5 forum and I personally did it myself- just type in tail light fix - you will need to not only sand but do a an easy solder job. takes about 2 hours or less and will fix the problem

Thanks for the input guys. A little follow up.....The pin at the tail/stoplight doesnt have any power and its been determined that the Light Control Module does not have power out for that light. I also learned that even though I have the same replacement control module (all the numbers match) that it needs to be coded. I have NCS expert and am going to replace and re-code the new module tomorrow. Ill keep you guys posted...
