Bluetooth for 2003 e53 4.4i
Hi,
I am trying to figure out if I will be able to purchase parts to install bluetooth in my X5. The build date is December 2002. I have the button on the steering wheel with the face and sound waves coming from his mouth. I also have a rectangular grill in the headliner that may have the mic in it. I am not sure how to tell. Will it be possible to install bluetooth? Thanks, Sean |
You can ,but it is very expensive from BMW ...................
|
Just get gromusb with bluetooth built in for about $175.

You can pair it before You close up the back . that should do it... . good luck. |
Your car should already have bluetooth in it. The bluetooth is limited to telephone functions, it will not play Pandora for you, for example.
Getting your phone to pair with the car is a bit of a trick, timing is everything. Holding your tongue against the roof of your mouth while spitting wooden nickels seems to help too. Seriously, timing is everything. Once you get the phone to pair, then it will connect each time you get in the car, you never have to deal with pairing again, unless you want to add another phone. |
In your package of Owner's Manual books, there should be a card with a pairing code printed on it. You will need to know this code else you cannot pair your phone.
|
because the build date of your x5 is before mid 2004 your Bluetooth wont work with any phones except the one that comes with the car from factory I think
if you have the bmw assist package and if your x5 has the module in the back already which sounds like you do you can buy a Bluetooth module off ebay from a x3 or a 2005/6 x5 and its plug and play, the pairing code is on the sticker on the module first 2 mins of ignition on is pairing mode |
Since you're looking for Bluetooth integration for your car, I would go all the way and update the entertainment technology and dash looks of the X5. Consider the Eonon GA5166 Android headunit upgrade for a reasonable price of around $450. It has 7" capacitive touch screen (like the one on your cell phone), OEM looks, Bluetooth version 2.0 (you will enjoy music streaming from your phone and hands free calling), Wifi, NAV, integrated mic, supports steering wheel functions, has radio, DVD, USB, SD, iPhone connection, aux and rear view camera support. Since it's an Android system it is a tablet too, so you can install any app you like such as Torque (OBD2 performance and diagnostics app) with which you would not only get OBD functions, but real time readings and thus no need to put the mid in the glove box. It also supports wireless hot spot so you can get in-car internet connectivity through your smart phone. It supports screen mirroring too! Installation is virtually plug and play if you don't have DSP.
Eonon GA5166 | BMW E39/E53 Android Car DVD | BMW E39/E53 Specific Car DVD | Android Car DVD for BMW E39/E53 I would have gotten this if my X5 didn't have DSP and NAV. I got the Dynavin N6 for a helluva $799 but it's worth it. |
I have the GROM unit and really like it. I think I will eventually upgrade to a Android.

I've never been able to get it to go to pairing mode. Ever. Same module placed into my wife's 2002M3 would go into pairing mode, but not in the X5... |

Make sure you have a small black box at the top of all the equipment in the trunk. It's a Bluetooth Antenna (#4 in photo). You also need the Telemetrics Control Unit (#1 in photo) which will have an access code on it. |
I have an early 04 and have done a ton of research on this.
Check your options and look for telephone pre-wiring and/or BMW assist. If you have either, then at a minimum, you'll need a newer (2005/2006) TCU. They show up on eBay pretty frequently for about $100. If you have the BMW Assist option, then you'll have the microphone, bluetooth antenna and all the wiring. Your TCU (located in the rear compartment with the stereo amp and CD changer) will need to be replaced. You may also need the voice control connector loopback plug installed. Take a look behind your CD changer and you should find a connector that's got a plug with some looped wires installed. If that's missing you'll need to install one. Depending on what options are installed, your vehicle might need to be coded too. Don't be fooled by the Bluetooth logo and pairing code on your existing TCU... it won't pair with your phone. I have a bunch of docs related to this upgrade. PM me with your email address and I'll send you what I've got. |
I have a dice media bridge and i have full bluetooth functionality. the buttons on the steering wheel work and all. Worth every penny! I make all my calls and play music etc through the car.
|
mad mike, does the dice unit answer a paired phone when you are listening to the stock radio? or a CD??
|
I'm rocking an intravee that I don't want to give up on as I like a lot of the extra features it gives me or I'd have bought a dice or grom unit already.
