Timing tools advise M62 engine
1 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys,
It's been a while I replaced timing chain guides and all the stuff associated with them, but I always wondered if I bought the right set on cam locks tools. If any of you who performed the same thing and still has the tools or remembers, please write a couple of words about the Exhaust camshaft angle in the locks. It is definitely isn't at 90º to the heads surface,I mean, that the square end doesn't align perpendicularly to the head, while the intake does. No,what confuses me even more is the availability of German Auto Solution timing kit which seems to lock all the camshafts in 90º position. On the picture below you can see what I am referring to.That angle makes exhaust valve advance a bit.Maybe I am paranoiac but I definitely feel a suction in the exhaust at idling. Any ideas? |
I just looked at the cam blocks I used to rebuild my M62 recently and none on them hold the cams 90* to the head. They all keep them slightly slanted. Maybe the GAS picture is just showing a generic picture?

I have the GAS timing kit. Worked great. Both exhaust cams are slanted a little bit in the red anodized holders.
|
This is exactly what I was looking to find out.
Thanks a lot,Guys! |
What 'Fish71' said is 100% correct.
+1 on the gas kit, I had issue with vanos timing using the 'regular' kit. |
the cam sensor wheel is very easy to set up with the GAS kit. The oem style is quite difficult to work with. looks like the pic above may be for a non vanos v8?
|
Upper timing covers have torx which cover the holes to check if the Cam Sensor wheel is set properly.
I was too exited to assemble everything and start that totally forgot to check if the wheels were properly aligned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiPK...ature=youtu.be |

Of course, but imagine if I lock it all in place, including the properly torque dummy tensioner and it doesn't align at all. Then it would be a good indicator.
In a month or so I am gonna retime everything and see if the CEL is gone for good. Quote:

What code is your engine throwing? I am battling DTC 34 (P0021) myself for a bank 2 inlet vanos.
