P1350 - Time to replace coils/plugs?
 

I got a misfire on startup on cylinder 5 last week, but it hasn't happened again since... however, I'm probably due to chance the plugs and coils... however, most sites show two very different looking coils, so not sure which to go with.

Are you shopping by "looks" or did you look up the 11 digit BMW part nbr based on your VIN ? I highly recommend the latter if you haven't looked up the part nbr using your VIN yet. By using one of the sites below and your VIN...it will eliminate one or the other by sending you to the parts that fall on either side of the build date range for the 2 different types of ignition coils.

Again, I highly recommend using one of the sites below...find the correct 11 digit part nbr for your VIN...then shop using the correct part nbr instead of generically by name or looks. This will prevent headaches, time, & frustration of buying the wrong parts. :)

Ah, found em on Rockauto... autopartsway had a few choices that looked very different for part # 12131712219

Rockauto doesn't have the best plugs tho.. so the quest continues ;)

First thing I've had to do since the OFHG last summer.

Have you removed the coil cover and verified the VCG has not leaked and soaked the coilpack area with oil?

Hm, I should. VCG was replaced about a yr and a half ago.

My recommendation is buy a set of used coils on ebay for cheap.

I bought a set of 6 Bremi coils for my 1998 528i (E39) for $50, so less than $10/each.
They sit in my garage waiting to be used. At 150K, my 1998 528i is still on original coils.

Used coils on ebay are usually stock BMW coils, they are cheap and you can keep some in the trunk as spare.

Just remove the cosmetic cover (10-mm bolts) and store the cosmetic cover in the trunk, this way you have quick access to the coils.

PS: replace only the coil that is bad.

And don't forget to read all the info in the part number index...like the TO & FROM dates...as well as if the part is no longer available as new (ended)...and the new part nbrs that replaced the old "ended" part number that are compatible.

The realoem site even has a small icon on the far right of the row that will give you an image of the part. In this case of the coils...the old ended nbr looks slightly different than the new part that replaces it...but both are compatible.

Thanks, you guys are the best. Found em on ebay for $300ish, plugs and coils.

Now debating whether to doing it myself... bad herniation in the mid-back, so even turning the steering wheel is unpleasant.
