Roof Repaint

Just waiting for the phone call......car is at the shop, and I inquired how much would it be for them to respray the roof and rails.

Whaddya think it should run. 1K more or less ?

Deansbimmer 04-24-2015 09:54 AM

If it were in my area and I were expecting a finished product that would match the OEM quality, I would expect a quote higher than 1k for roof and rails.

Joshdub 04-24-2015 12:34 PM

Probably 1-2k.

mam4.6 04-24-2015 01:17 PM

Expect 1500 to 1800. When i removed my rails, my roof was resprayed for 1200.

jsoto 04-24-2015 04:47 PM

I've never paid for bodywork out of pocket. Maybe once, but this was a small part like a trunk handle as I got a new one to retrofit a backup cam into it.

Hmm...tough call.OCD says do it. My *i think I might sell it in a yr or 2* says no, not worth it, if it's north of 1500

Joshdub 04-24-2015 05:43 PM

What is wrong with it?

puddinboo 04-24-2015 07:15 PM

I would guess around 2500.00 can.

squidzilla 04-24-2015 07:47 PM

Well you could plasti dip the entire car... or vinyl wrap it... not sure how durable it is.

Nothing really. If you've ever seen my car, the paint/body is MINT for car given it's age. Part of it is due to the bodyshop I use, which is meticulos. Every panel has had some level of fresh paint, except for the roof and rails. It's at the shop cause some debris on the roadway nicked the front hood and side panel, about a quarter size dimple.......so I figured I would ask how much ~more~ it would be for my out of pocket to have that sprayed.

Joshdub 04-24-2015 08:41 PM

So the roof is perfectly fine? You do know that repainting lowers the value of then car, right? On cars like these, you are hardpressed to find anyone who can do as well of a job as the factory. I tend to avoid cars that have had paintwork, as you can't really tell what's hiding just under the paint.

jsoto 04-24-2015 08:55 PM

The roof has one area about about a 1/4 round where hard maple sap has etched the top. Rails have lost it's coating. Then front clip, I've touched up through the years on the minute rock bits you get on the leading edge towards the front windshield..

I hear you on the value, but at the 6 year mark of ownership, I knew it was either a keeper or a tosser....meaning, when I sold it, it was not going to be worth anything anyhow, so resale meant nothing to me. I don't buy used so I know what I'm *getting into*.

I had my rails powder coated. About $80 and they look great and is much more durable than painting them.

Ricky Bobby 04-28-2015 04:34 PM

^Agreed I am getting the rails powdercoated as well.

I was planning to PC them this summer....but by luck, the X ended in the shop - some debris hit it. Did not even notice it, until it was parked and a quarter size dent/ding was on the hood and fender.

The roof actually turned out to what I thought it would have been...somewhere around $800 and another $175 for the rails.....he's getting paid a ton already....for what he got the adjuster to pay, so it all worked out, I suppose, and my OOP for the additional was more inline with what I thought.

Ricky Bobby 04-30-2015 12:01 PM

I'm finding that PC'ing parts by pricing is all over the place. Guy local to me told me $250 to PC the rails, does that sound high?

jsoto 04-30-2015 10:01 PM

250 is high....he did not want the job or the time involved was worth $250 to him....

My PC is pretty awesome when it comes to wheels.

When I gave him a set of 4 AC Hydraulic jackstands, I think there were about $40 each .

jcp240z 05-01-2015 01:08 AM

I got 4 style 69 rims and my rails done for 480, a 100/wheel and 80 for the rails. My valve covers for 120
