It was the starter! After buying a used starter of ebay for $45 and using this write up http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-e53-4-4l.html the X starts up like a charm! This was definitely the hardest repair I have done but I am very happy with the results (I did find after removing the panels underneath the car that there was oil leaking :(. That problem is a bit above my skill level though.) I just have to buy some new bolts. Thanks everybody!
