Kbus

Hi all. Recently purchased anothe E53. I have a Parrot MKi9100 with loom. It's advising to install onto the Kbus. Can anyone help with where this is please? Thanks in advance.

The Diesel Guy 05-31-2015 12:59 AM

Any takers òn this?

The e53 uses ibus for the entertainment system. This is basically a dedicated comm bus that is hardware/electrically the same as the kbus. I see that parrot has an interface for the kbus but says its compatible >2007. You can probably make it work but not a lot of guys here have hacked their ibus. I've done a lot of research as I'm planning (after all the other projects) to do a CarPC.
I'd Google for MKi9100 ibus integration. I see more stuff on the German pages, but you need to run them through a translator, unless you speak German.

You may also want to be more specific on what you are installing it in. It would help if you added your vehicles to your signature.

Good luck

Hi. Thanks for your help. I've found a black box that sits underneath the cd changer but the cables are the wrong size for my loom!

Qsilver7 06-01-2015 02:49 PM

High cluster uses I-bus...low cluster uses K-bus. But as previously mentioned...you haven't given us enough vehicle detail (model/model year/build date) to be of much help. We have no clue what you have so making suggestions is difficult.

The images below are topological charts of the two different set-ups:

Ah...you have a 2002 X5 4.4 (consider adding that info in a signature that will permenantly appear at the bottom of all your posts). Based on your forum name...I assumed that you had one of the diesel X5 3.0d models with the M57/M57TU engines.

This means that you have the HIGH instrument cluster...thus your audio equipment communicates over the I-bus (as in the 2nd illustration in my post above). :)

The Diesel Guy 06-03-2015 09:44 PM

Hi Qsilver7. I will change it to my signature. This is my 5th BMW X5, when I originally joined I had a 3.0d facelift.

I've been told that it connects in the rear LEFT side pocket. Is this true? Going on that diagram it's saying it connects to the rear of the instrument panel? This to me would make more sense as there's no way that the cables to the Parrot's controller would reach from the rear side pocket. I originally thought that the wiring loom for the bluetooth went behind the stereo. But this wasn't the case.

The Ibus is in many places, it's at the rear, at the mid, at the cluster. It can be tapped at any location.

Is 2002 when they went to a 40 pin connector?

I've seen people claim that 2001 is 40 pin, but mine is 17 pin (No Nav, w/DSP).

If it's a 17 Pin, you can just tap into pin 7 (white/grey stripe/yellow dashes or "dots"--although I've read that others have grey/white stripe/yellow dots) for the signal if it's looking for the signal for steering wheel controls.

Some people state that you *have* to intercept it at the steering column, but I tapped into it right at the 17 pin connector and it works perfectly. You can always try that (as it's quick/easy to make the connection there) and if it doesn't work, then dig deeper for a different spot in the car.

Not sure if that's the information you're looking for though as I've never installed one of those units.
