Kudos to the venerable M54 one of the best engines BMW built. Considering the shockingly expensive maintenance issue$ with the V8s post 100,000K I'm thankful mine's an i6.

:iagree: Great job of maintaining that - I'm especially impressed to see the effort to take care of those front drive shaft splines

Can you provide some detail on fitting the updated steering rack in?

Yeah, the tech docs call for Weicon grease on the splines.

Took mine out to do the TC chain, no grease AT ALL.

I guess they missed it on the assembly line.

Yes. .. original transmission and it still shifts perfectly! I got the car with 140k and it's been great. 1st gear leaves a lot to be desired but otherwise it's great.

I just move to north utah county. .. just over the point of the mountain. Where are you? I don't see many utahs on here... it's good to know there are a few of us out there! I'm not alone!

The Servotronic rack is relatively simple upgrade – I bout A1 Cardone rebuilt rack and Servotronic valve. Our cars prewired from factory for this option – the electrical plug taped to the left strut tower. You’ll need however to enable Servotronic option by coding general module. I did it on both of my X5s back in 2013 and very happy with results.

^^Interesting - is that the unused plug on the left strut tower? Link or part # to servotronic valve? Wondering how much $$$ to invest and what benefits of servotronic rack - just lighter or tighter steering?
