bmw e53 m54 rattle noise in D
 

Hi all first time posting on here, im after some advice if poss. I have a e53 m54 it is driving well other than a rattle type noise when im stationary, it seems to go when im in natural but as soon as I go to D it becomes apparent again. Cant really hear anything while im driving, Ive had a look and it seems to be coming from the disa area/injectors, the Disa has been replaced 2 years ago by BMW at a cost of £180 less than15000 miles ago, could just be a normal noise, whats your opinion's? Had a look/listen to your video and it's not easy to tell where the 'rattle' is coming from, although there's a distinct difference in 'noise' when you engage neutral.
You may want to remove the disa to inspect if this is the culprit. There are re-build kits available on-line. A google search revealed a number of youtube clips, including these:

Thanks for your reply, I did disconnect the Disa plug and it didn't make any difference maybe I will take your advice and take the disa right out and have a look at the flap itself. would you know is it a easy job to do? Am I right in thinking it is just 2 bolts? thanks

Not done this myself, as mine (N-62) doesn't have the disa. I believe you'll need some sealant to re-install after removal, if the seal is compromised during this process (allow sufficient time for this to cure too). Seems simple enough - just one electrical connection and two bolts, gently pry off, inspect flap for integrity, inspect vacuum port is not blocked and all is moving freely. I would give this a shot first, then go further if needed. This is a common fault so I believe and certainly seems to fit the description of your problem. Do a search on this site for more info, as I'm sure many others would have dealt with this.

Thanks I'll certainly give this ago, the thing that I'm confused about is that I have a recepit from previous owner from bmw in my paperwork to say it was replaced less than 15000 miles ago seems strange it would go again after such short milage but won't put anything passed the kids at the main dealers lol thanks for your help I'll let you know.

It's not going to do any harm, so I would remove and inspect the disa to ensure it's working as it should. At least you'll be able to deduct this as one source of the problem, if the rattle persists. Good luck and let us know what the outcome is! ;-)

I'm no expert, but this looks as it should and seems to operate okay. Perhaps other members with more knowledge on the disa can chime in to confirm? At the very least, you may have eliminated this as a potential source of the 'rattling'. I would put it back, ensure there are no vacuum leaks (seals well), crank up the motor and investigate further. Sometimes, putting a long handled screwdriver on the area of the 'rattle' and the other end to your ear or jawbone will give you a 'cleaner' sound and isolate the source of the noise. Sounds strange I know, but it does work well in my experience.

RPM is dropping when you go from Neutral to Drive, that is why you have the rattling sound. Turn on the AC and see if the RPM doesn't goes up while in neutral and drive and if the rattle is still there.
