N62 4.4 to 4.8 swap

Looks like I need to replace the motor on my 4.4 X5. I found a clean 4.8 engine from a 550 on eBay for relatively cheap. Has anyone here done this swap. I'd like to ask here to see if it's easily doable before I pull the trigger. I figure, why not upgrade if I have to buy a motor anyways.

Any input on this is appreciated. Please and thank you!!!

I have not done this swap but I previously looked into it. The main issue is that the 4.8 has an engine oil cooler (a different one to the 4.4) so you would need that cooler, piping and bracket.

The N62 on the e53 is slightly different than the N62 in the e60 & e65/e66 due to the (I believe) one of the front axle's half shafts runs through the oil pan. I can't remember if it's the left or right one.

Adding to qsilvers post,

I believe the sedans had a secondary airpump system while the 4.8is does not.

My main concern is parts compatibility. I have a good 4.4 engine I can swap parts from. I heard the exhaust bolts on the head are drilled differently on a 4.8 than the 4.4. Anyone shed some light on this?

I can swap my oil pan, headers, and any other parts that would be different. Would I need a 4.8 engine harness? I think the dme is also different.

I'm also interested in this- I have a 2005 4.4 at 155K miles that is exhibiting rough idling/running when cold and I suspect a Valvetronic problem. I think at this point I'd rather just replace the whole long block with something with lower mileage.

OP- did you attempt the swap or learn anything else about it?
