Soft Close Trunk Retrofit NOT Possible

Just for the record, since there isn't much info on this anywhere..

I pulled the servo lock, big rubber bump stop, and GM3 (general) module off a junk car to try to retrofit soft close to my 4.6is. As it turns out, the wiring harness is not the same, and there are 2 wires for the soft close that don't exist on the pre-facelift models.

These wires are part of the car's main wiring harness and run all the way up to the general module behind the glove box. So unless you want to rip your whole car apart for the soft close feature, then it's not going to work.

Disappointing, but putting it out there for anyone else who is thinking of trying.

Just more FYI:

I want to do it.
Anyone done it?
Need part numbers or pictures for what's needed.
GM3 module is not hard to find.

me to i wont it i have added springs so it auto opens on the press of the button , but now i wont the auto close , so jcorreanyc you saying the wires are there in a facelift but not in a preface lift as mine is a facelift do you have pics of the bits you pulled.

If you have a facelift then you already have the soft-close actuator.

so we talking about if you dont shut it fully and it pulls itself in shut , rather than it closing from fully open.

Correct... the soft-close function works only to lock the hatch without slamming it.

No E53 ever had the fully electric open/close tailgate. You could possible retro-fit such a feature but I've not seen anyone do it.

Something like this might work... https://www.autoease.com/product/liftgate/

i love how he ties to look cool back kicking the car to shut the tailgate in the promo video :rofl:

Unless of course your 17 year old daughter doesn't understand the concept of "just set it down honey, it will pull itself closed" - "SLAM!!!!" - anyway... :(

I'm pretty sure you could make the E70 unit work on an E53. Maybe not not advanced functions like opening with the key fob etc. but certainly the basic lift functions...

I'm wondering about that too. There're parts from E70 that just plug and play on the E53. I wonder if this is yet another one.

And it'll only cost you $700 to find out.... :D

Totally drives me crazy! Every other member of my family knows how I am with it and have no problem, to her... "it's just a piece of steel and rubber, I won't break it" - so I now charge her $5 every time she slams one.

That seems to have gotten her attention  (for now)

Oh lord there is nothing like a supermarket bag boy..... You have to preface the load with "there's a tip in it for you if you don't slam the hatch or doors clear through the other side of the car"... and even that only works about half the time

That's why the F15 is the grocery getter. Power liftgate has permeated the auto market enough now that every bagger knows to look for a button.

dazzasgotav8 08-04-2021 05:27 PM

is the super market bag boy ooopppss shouldnt we be saying bag person  does this bag boy live in the boot cause i have checked and mine appears missing.

Bag boy, bag person, whatever. I'm not crippled. I take my groceries to my car and load them myself. Don't ever have to worry about someone slamming my lid.

Hah! Being crippled has nothing to do with it. If I can find an opportunity to avoid the general mouth-breathing public, I'll take it. But I'm generally pretty anti-social as well (XO being the exception obviously with my post count :wow:)... so yeah, people irritate me. I'll take curb-side pickup every time. If I never have to do a full round of groceries (with a list) again it'll continue to be a huge improvement on my mental well-being.

People irritate me too, but I'm picky about my fresh food and I don't trust some minimum wage moron to pick it for me. So, in the store I go. I'm like you, I don't like people much either, but that mainly means the general public. Anyone like me that has spent any time working with the general public knows how stupid they are.

That's pretty cool. First thing that jumps to mind though is what happens if someone slams them not knowing they're soft close?
