Mouse in the X5

I went up north for the weekend with my wife in her X5 and needed to bring back a snowmobile cover for a sled I plan on selling. I stop by the barn to get the cover off a nail that I keep it hanging on. Take it outside and give it a good shake, then throw it in the back of the X5. My wife opens up a back door and sees a mouse running. I grab the cover and throw it outside and find another mouse hiding. it was 9:00 pm on Sunday. We line the car with snap traps 6 total. We play cat and mouse for a couple of hours and the mouse wins every time. Late at night and no sticky traps we go to bed, hoping it will be in a trap come morning. No luck. So we drive home 300 miles with a mouse in the car. We get home and my wife goes to the store and buys 6 packs of sticky traps. I line the whole car with traps and finally catch him. What a relief. My wife keep asking "what are you going to do if he dies in MY car". What a weekend.

Good job on nailing the Lil'Bastard!

We live in the woods on a mtn ridge, at 5,000 ft.

Everyone up here either has mice, had mice, or the mice are orbiting back 'in' somewhere: house, cars, etc. Or, one is in denial that 'they have mice'. :)

Of the several cars we have had here at our Mtn home over the years, mice have managed to get into every car we have, with the exception of our '01 X5.

I don't know if the X is simply 'tighter' than the other cars, or the mice simply haven't discovered a way into it.

They can compress themselves and push through an opening smaller than a dime. They can chew through almost any material, if given enough time and impetus.

But, while they got into the CEO's old 2003 CR-V, (and destroyed the HVAC ventilation tubing), and have gotten into the CEO's current '10 Hyundai Tuck, and occasionally into the trunk of the '02 VetteVert, they have never been discovered in our '02 X, other than under the hood. :)

Either they don't like E53s, or the car is tight as a fookin bio containment center. ;)

The mice were transported into the OP's X, but glad you got the vermin...

The story is not over.
I left all the traps in over night, you know just in case.
Went out this morning to clean out the X and found a second mouse.
I will wait another day or so with the traps.

You could also put your car in the car for the night (with food and a litter box) ...

I had a similar problem with another car, only these vermin were rats - big hairy, smelly bastards. One of the pitfalls of living in the bush I suppose...
The car is stored, under a cover in my garage/workshop and not used for about 2 months at a time. When I went to use the car, I discovered a trail of poo on the rear parcel shelf, back seat, in the trunk and on the dash. Not only this, but the whole car reeked of ratshit. I was devastated and for the life of me, couldn't figure out how these little critters managed to get inside the car... Thankfully, there was no evidence of anything having been chewed up, or damaged, other than a few spots of urine stain and the obvious stink that these little shits leave behind.
Laid a trail of bait for them in the trunk, under the seats, parcel shelf etc. and checked the car daily for a week or so. I ended up discovering not only a mother rat, but four babies that had taken the bait and died. Took about a year or more to get rid of the horrible smell of rats from the inside of the car, during which time, my wife refused to go anywhere in our luxury car. We still own this car. It gets driven rarely, but it now gets inspected once a week and has 'bait' left inside the trunk. I've not had a problem with vermin inside this car since (this was two+ years ago) but have nasty memories of this experience and wondering how I would have reacted if I had been driving the car and seen a rat run around under my feet, on the seat or across the dash???
