YES or NO, Wheel refurb take 2 (possibly) inputs wanted please

Hi all

I refurbed my genuine style 87 4.6IS wheels last week as they were looking a little sorry for them selves and I went for a complete change from silver to high gloss black and I wanted to do this little addition at the same time but the spray booth was only free for the one evening so I was limited by time so just went straight black and now I'm considering adding this other addition this Saturday.

I knocked up a template out of masking tape of the recess on the face of the wheel then sprayed the template away from the car and then stuck it back on to get a better idea of how it might look bear in mind it's not lacquered and the bolt holes and badge are not shown.

How they look black (I know not everyone's a fan of black but I'm just after comments on the alteration):

My template I made up:

Sprayed body colour steel Grey and popped back on the wheel:

If that was my X, I would leave the wheels alone and focus on refinishing those nasty calipers.

They are in need of a freshen up and on my to do list

Sorry. Not my cup of tea.
Not fan of blank wheels in general. Of course there are few that can pull it off.

Looks terrible and aftermarket, IMO. Terribly aftermarket

Sorry but I went ahead and did it against what most originally said and it turned out great and most of the haters here and on the UK forum ended up liking it:

Its your car and if you like it thats what matters. I only posted my opinion because your title says inputs wanted please. No need to apologize - mod your car how you want to.

I'd go for it looks much better than all black....but I'd be tempted to coach line the flat of the rim near the tyre in bright red and refurb the calipers too much..

I like mine big and shiny .....

You guys are LUCKY with the Five spoke wheels, easy to clean, easy to get in there and detail. Meanwhile with seven it is A PITA.

Its your damn big brakes lol.

168's with my 3.0 brakes are easy peezy to clean and I use wheel woolies and a boars hair brush to clean

The calipers are huge on the 4.8is models. Larger than my M5 that is for certain. Once painted with Epoxy they are simple to keep clean.

^We should work on retrofitting those to our M5 :D

I think it would look sharp if you painted the retaining clips black. I'm thinking about doing that on mine

A bit late to this, but have to say that everything you have posted shows that it has been professionally done,so congrats to you, mate ,for being a pro.
Not many can do it themselves and have to pay and rely on pros to do it.Truth be said ,some do spoil the cars with silly mods.

With regards to your wheels, everyone has different tastes ,of course, but they look much better than plain black that you see on a lot of X5s.Colour coded centre is a nice touch and reminds me when I used to do it ,ages ago!Yours look exclusive and have been professionally done ,not plastidipped!

Calipers !Red or blue :)

To throw my 2 cents - regardless of workmanship quality, I would have to say I don't like it. The contrast dark-ish color of the car and bright silver rims is lost, now it is dark-ish car and black rims. Also - we just bought another E53 which is metallic black, my wife looked at it and said that it looks significantly smaller than another on that is stratus gray. For the same reason - visual appearance of black rim + black tire on dark-ish shade color of the car, makes whole wheel look smaller. Sorry - I don't usually leave negative remarks, much prefer not to say anything if there is nothing good to say but hopefully you will not be offended by my opinion.

They are available in the aftermarket colored that way. Next question is life expectancy of the paint. Most are just rattle can paint and rust up in 6 months. I wanted the "OE" look as currently 90% of the viewers don't even notice that they are even painted.

andrewwynn 10-08-2015 03:08 AM

Don't like the two tone. Black only better. I prefer matte. Might be able to do two tone matte/gloss both black
