the X rolled off the jack
In a moment of pure stupidity and what not the X rolled off the jack while I was replacing the driver side front tire after a flat tire....
I was able to get the X jacked back up, placed something else behind the other rear wheel and completed the replacement. However, as you can imagine something got tweaked. Car accelerates, brakes, and drives normally (alignment is not messed up) When turning left there is a bumping noise.... if anyone has experience with this and has ideas where to look when I get back under the car I would appreciate it, |
The dust shield behind the rotor probably got bent when the car rolled off the jack.

Assuming bent dust shield is the problem, yes you can just bend it back into shape.

Glad you weren't hurt (or at least not seriously, since you didn't mention it)
One of my worst fears |
Yeah,
The basic rule of jacking up the car is still there: - Chock the diagonal wheel, if replacing LF tire, then chock the RR tire. Get bricks, rocks or wood and chock BOTH the fore and aft part of the tire. - Get the spare tire out ahead of time and verify pressure. - The surface is important: concrete is best. If not, then place a small piece of plywood under the jack. - Then quickly swap the tire, it should not take more than 15 sec of the time when the car has no tire on. PS: Avoid replacing flat tire on the side of the road or highway shoulder. It is potentially deadly, especially now that people are more distracted than ever. Get the car into a parking lot or gas station and get far off the road, even if you have to destroy the tire. A tire is still cheaper than your life... |
I had some rust flakes get behind the "rock guard" which does go below the brake disk and would be what the car landed on with approximately 1100# of force if no wheel on the car when it fell. It's only thin metal and would surely be bent. In my case with the rust I heard squeaky scraping all the time until discovered and removed. Might be slightly different situation if only hearing on left turns but almost certainly related.
X5 comes with fantastic set of wheel chocks even can use "upside down" with teeth that will grab on ice. Use them people. Another trick I learned as a kid: put the spare under the car for safety then put the flat under while swapping. At least the car won't drop to the ground. Sent from my awrPhone using Tapatalk |
