Fwiw I have never had to undo rad hoses to remove my fan on the m54.

When I replaced the alternator on my M54 E53, like Joshdub, didn't touch the hoses - I did remove the power steering reservoir/filter, and used the ebay fan clutch tool [the two part type, very helpful] to remove the fan, belts, etc.

You guys are correct, I should mention that disconnecting the hose is not required. I made this quick video as part of a larger cooling system service, the full video is here:

In my experience though, removing the upper radiator hose makes positioning the fan clutch tools on the water pump pulley nuts easier. Thanks for clarifying that piece!
