Seattle area XOutposter?

Saw a really nice blue 4.8is on highway 99 in Lynnwood last night. It had what looked like aftermarket exhaust tips on it and was super clean.

Did I see an XOutposter? I know there are a few of you in the area...

525iT_Feen 11-12-2015 03:33 PM

I wonder if it was my old Lemans.

Joshdub 11-12-2015 04:49 PM

I saw a blue 4.8is with the aero kit and dinan badges on I5 around Ballard two days ago.

Two of my x5 20" wheels were badly damaged. Corey at Xtreme Wheel repair did a perfect job fixing them. The repair was flawless and he guarantees his work for life (so he said) against paint peeling or color fading. He speaks and works with so much confidence that I trust this guy. He says if you're not satisfied with his work, you don't pay! I must add that the price was just right and my pocket is still hale and hearty!

Nice! Mind telling us how much per wheel?

Joshdub 03-16-2016 12:05 PM

I am also interested.

X5only 03-16-2016 01:47 PM

He had told me $100 minimum and can go up-to $150 for a complete wheel rebuild including straightening, paint stripping and repaint, if I recall accurately. I paid $120 per wheel that were badly damaged, I mean really ugly deep scuffs. The wheels were restored to perfect condition. He has an Advanced Xtreme Wheel Repair Machine.

It's very hard to come across excellent, honest and affordable wheel repair shops. This guy is the real deal, folks. His phone number is 425-327-1152. He is also a fireman.

SASM5 03-16-2016 08:11 PM

Those are really good prices actually...I had mine done on my old E39 by a shop that came to my house for $160 each...thanks for the recommendation!

X5only 03-29-2016 06:56 PM

Is there anyone who does valve stem seals replacement on the N62 engine in our region at a reasonable cost? There's a BMW master tech in the east coast who does it for less than $2k. He says the repair takes 2 days to complete. Problem is transporting or driving to and fro. I've asked around here and all mechanics want to charge almost 50% (some even more) the value of the vehicle.

Earl's machine shop in Burien. Awesome job. Have them resurface the heads while your in there and do a 3 angle grind. Out the door was $430 for my 4.6is.

Joshdub 03-29-2016 08:45 PM

I would check the forums for members whom would be willing to do it for you or with you. A shop is going to charge a shit load because they can, even with the tools. Earls would be good but from the sounds of it that's if you bring him the heads.

edogg 03-29-2016 09:45 PM

Signature in Kirkland did mine. It was covered under warranty so I'm not sure the actual cost. Give them a call and ask for Leah (owner's daughter) to get the most accurate quote.

i've been quoted 3500 to replace valve stems on N62 engines by a local shop in federal way.

I'll be doing it myself when the time comes using the AGA tool. no blue smoke yet but i'm creeping up to 120k miles. sooner or later they will be due.

Are you planning to rent the AGA tool?

itscoo2pyopants 03-31-2016 06:26 PM

I was planning on buying it. they go for approx. 700 used on ebay, I found a local guy on craigslist but he's asking $8xx. we have 3 N62's in the family so it will be a nice tool to have around when it is needed.

I have one N62 so if you're so inclined, I could borrow the tool from you when not in use for a fee if you wish. Willing to give a deposit to protect your investment. Thoughts? Other locals probably would be interested too, I don't know. But I can handle the work for seal replacement.

itscoo2pyopants 04-01-2016 12:19 AM

^ sounds like a plan. I will let you know when I get my hands on one

X5only 04-01-2016 07:05 PM

Guys, how about we list what uncommon tools we locals have and then we can borrow from each other when available? We probably could also pool resources if we really need a rare tool.....I'm thinking stuff like rear subframe bushing removal tool, timing tools, etc. Kinda create our own tool borrowing system that we ourselves contribute to the tool collection ...... thoughts?

Joshdub 04-01-2016 07:10 PM

That's not a bad idea. Would probably work better as a Seattle BMW facebook group, that way we get more people.

SASM5 04-04-2016 05:16 PM

Need some help here guys! No tire shops I've checked with locally will install spacers on my wifes E70 so I can mount up her 128's...any ideas? I already have the H&R spacers in hand...

Thanks!

Joshdub 04-04-2016 05:26 PM

Have you thought about doing it yourself? Tire shops typically (around here anyway) wont touch spacers.

SASM5 04-04-2016 05:42 PM

Haha! That's hilarious. I totally spotted you too and even pointed out to my wife (who was driving) your 4.6is rear valance and the fact that I could tell you had a manual... I even said 'guaranteed xoutpost.com guy'... Love the silver man! We were picking up my e60 from Josh who was diagnosing some suspension issues for me.

My goodness, yesterday I saw an absolutely clean silver 4.4 with staggered style 87 wheels, with an amazing exhaust note that has the 4.8 tips. It was being driven up NE 36th street along Redmond Microsoft campus towards 156th street. It looked and sounded absolutely sexy!

SASM5 04-26-2016 11:50 PM

Triple sightings today. Black 4.8is headed East on 90 just out of Issaquah this AM, the usual silver 4.8is with Oregon plates on the waterfront downtown, and finally a other blacked out 4.6is just off front street in Issaquah at the end of the day.

Does anyone have AGA tool for valve stem seals repair N62 engine that I could borrow (will leave deposit to protect your investment)? I found a rental place online but have to wait for long and the time is not flexible - it may be available when I'm not ready. I may have to just buy then resale after repair if I can't find any to rent when I need it.

WhidbeyX5 06-18-2016 10:53 PM

I live in the Seattle area. more specifically the south end of Whidbey Island. I am the third owner of a 2003 X5 4,4i equipped with 2 Axle Air Suspension. This vehicle has spent most of the last year and a half in my garage. Recently, I decided to get the INPA up and working. It took forever, but finally got it working.

I need someone who understands the coding to come to Whidbey and help me get the codes set. I will pay reasonable rates and your ferry fees. I would like to start with the suspension and height adjustments.

Why don't you get DIS/SSS or ISTA D/P and do all the coding and diagnostics yourself? Those are dealer level apps and therefore are easy to use. INPA, NCSExpert, WinKFP and such are factory level (low level) apps and therefore difficult to use and require technical understanding of what you're doing. NCSExpert or WinKFP can brick your car if wrongly used in write mode e.g., writing wrong code for the wrong module. Dealer level apps are high level, guide you and offer protection from destructive errors.

BMcables.com sells ISTA D and P 2015 for around $50. ISTA is the current dealer app.

Before placing my SOS on this forum, I had ordered DIS GTI v44 and v57 SSS from Germany. If I can read it in English, I could be ok. {Mein Deutsch ist nicht so gut). I am still intrigued by these professionals. My current need is tyo get the 2-Axle Suspension in operation. I replaced a leaking left front air spring. I also replaced the Control Module. The Control Module seems to need some coding before the INPA will save the settings. When I looked at NCS Expert, I was afraid to make any changes and I could not navigate the system. Thus, my request for help.

WhidbeyX5 06-21-2016 04:13 PM

I have DIS GTI v44 and v57 SSS in English and you can have it if you want. Nowadays I'm using ISTA. As for NCS expert, you can use NCS Dummy which will make life with NCS Expert so much, much easier.

Depends on the price and general condition. You are right on finding one local being difficult. Most likely have to ship one.

You certainly got a great deal! I bought the same type of wheels a couple of years ago for $900. Those wheels go for like 2.5k on ebay.

For repair, check out Corey at Xtreme Wheel repair tel 425-327-1152. He'll make them look like new. He did a perfect job fixing mine and his price is great- something like $70 a wheel for rashes last time I was there.

He has great reviews:

I bought my 4.6 engine for $5k shipped from California. The cost of the swap was around $4,700.

For $10k and some patience you can buy another 4.6is.

Now,the cost of a well running 4.4 is about a grand. I've heard of people salvaging the 4.6 heads and cams to turm the 4.4 into a 4.6. You save about $4k that way. This guy went the opposite way and used the 4.4 heads on a 4.6 block:

Sweet! But wait.. Just one? :nanana: Kidding.

I would love a ride though. I've always liked a wagon with balls. While I've driven here, the X is spending most of the time in a garage sucking down un-freakin-believable daily parking rates. I've got ab a 1/2 mile walk to and from my hotel to the customer. Great weather for it even if walking isn't one of my 'go to' activities. ;)

My sister lives in Gig Harbor. I've yet to visit her there. It will be our jumping off point to all vacation destinations next Monday. I dunno if that's any closer to the beast with balls you're driving, but if so, that's a win.

And believe me- if there is one thing I like more than a beer... it's a Bimmer that's been tuned to the heart of an enthusiast. Bring the car. Maybe I buy *you* the beer!

While in town, you ought to have DUDMD put a tune on your rig. Here, he's 30 minutes away.

'06 Imola Red 4.8is in Issaquah/Redmond checking in. '05 4.4i stashed in the MSFT parking structure too, but you're not going to find it lurking on the road. :)

I've used Koa for work on my E93 and he is absolutely awesome. That said, he's told me he doesn't do anything for the E53.

KoA?

OrangeFurious 07-29-2016 05:37 PM

Koa (pronounced kwah) is the guy who runs bimcoding.com - software manipulation for BMWs. On my e93 M3 he installed some of the euro performance software and other things like adjust the window and lighting behavior. Sadly no options for the E53.

Plattus1000 07-30-2016 01:53 AM

Sorry, I read e93 as e39 and it didn't sound like anything I'd heard before. I got excited that there might be a new shop for coding locally.

Thanks for the clarification and please excuse my dyslexic moment.

Plattus1000 07-30-2016 01:56 AM

DUDMD from bimmerforums who works in Auburn could probably do coding for e53's. Same basic components and systems involved as an e39.

He's tuned 3 of my cars over the years. He doesn't charge an arm and a leg and he works on all kinds of bimmers, some mercs and audi's too. He's really on top of his digitally modified automobile game.

That's good to know. My 4.8is has a totally different set of coding than my '05 4.4. I have to assume the 4.8is was specced specifically to annoy me. Every coding option I wish it didn't have. I have an INPA cable but have no experience in this and would rather not risk it.

Plattus1000 - thanks for the recommendation. Talked to Dima and have an appointment to get coded on Monday.

Sweet. You'll be a fan! There's a 4wheel dyno just down the street @ "drift-office" that you should check out too! You know, before and after results...

I've seen a red 4.8is 2 days in a row in Issaquah....black roof rack, looks good!

I'm almost positive that's me. :) Squak Mountain area?

SASM5 08-04-2016 05:05 PM

Nice! Miss mine already! I saw it once in the issy highlands, and once on 90 headed into Seattle near West lake sammy exit.

Yeah, that sounds like me. :) My wife just sold her old place in the Highlands and the West Lake Samm exit is my on/off point to work in Redmond.

Are you still in the '06 4.8is? I recall seeing a very slick black one on the 90 a couple weeks back, just before I bought mine. I tried to shadow in my M3 to get a better look but traffic didn't allow.

SASM5 08-04-2016 10:46 PM

Nope, sadly just sold... Look out for my e60 or my wife's e70 with chrome wheels

Spent some time with Dima this morning - absolutely excellent, and cheap too. Thanks again for the recommendation.

He's Dima-n!

Just finished a complete suspension overhaul + KW coilovers on my E92, but Bellevue BMW dealer wouldn't touch it for an alignment. Anyone know of a trustworthy shop that will correctly do alignment on bimmers with after-market suspension?

Joshdub 08-25-2016 11:39 AM

Tru line. They are a high end suspension shop. Be warned though, they'll really try to push for a corner balance since you have coilovers. They are pricey but their alignments are on point.

OrangeFurious 11-02-2016 12:54 AM

Heya-

On my way home today I spotted a gorgeous blue 4.6is with aftermarket halos rolling down I-90 near Issaquah. Hard to sa for sure but it felt like there was a bit of lane-jockeying to check out each other's rides. Anyone on the board? I was in my red 4.8is with black rims.

Thanks for the recommendation. They did a great job and at a very reasonable price.

No problem! I'm glad you gad a good experience

Silver 01 3.0 checking in.
I'm down in the south end (Kent, FW, Auburn...)

I've seen a few nice X's around, but don't seem to get much love when I wave.:dunno:

Car is pretty modest compared to my previous BMW's. So far it has chrome 4.6is wheels, roof rack delete and a curved LED bar low on the front bumper.

itscoo2pyopants 11-08-2016 04:59 PM

:wavey:

Joshdub 11-08-2016 05:35 PM

Nice! I'll be sure to wave if I see you. I also have a silver pre-facelift with a roof rack delete (until it starts snowing).

I have three BMWs and each one has a totally different response when encountering someone with the same model.
  • M3 - If the driver is over 40, a smile and a wave. If the driver is under 40, brief staring competition to see who has the more expensive version and then rev the engine a bunch before hurrying away.
  • 750il (E38) - A subtle nod, indicating not only the exquisite taste and breeding of those who own the greatest 7-series variant, but also the unrivaled majesty of my V12. We then both polish our monocles, tip our top hats and elegantly drift away.
  • X5 - Usually, I'm totally ignored because the driver is too busy talking into three cell phones while swerving back and forth across two lanes, shouting at a child and batting away errant sporting goods. Alternately, we spend way too much time slowly lane-jockeying to check out each other's mods, then rush home to post here and see if we know each other.
One of my favorite X5 moments in Issaquah was what I thought to be that last example - I ran across an unusually nice pre-facelift 3.0i on my way home, and fell into traffic behind him to check out his ride. After a block he brake-checked me, swerved into a driveway and went into angry-dad mode. I guess he thought I was tailgating (I wasn't). :(

Joshdub 11-17-2016 11:51 AM

Spotted a silver prefacelift with some non stock chrome wheels, iS rear diffuser, running boards, and iS exhaust in the side of 167. I was headed in the opposite direction. Hopefully the rest of your day goes better.

X5only 11-17-2016 01:35 PM

Hey Seattle wallahs, any one with the AGA N62 valve stem seal tool? Currently I'm using oil additives to stop the smoking and it's working really well, but I know this is not a long term solution. I have the rear subframe bushings tool so if any one wants to borrow it, feel free to ping me.

Joshdub 11-17-2016 02:14 PM

Damn dude I just rented the rear subframe tool! Unfortunately I don't know of anyone with the valve stem tool.

OrangeFurious 01-09-2017 04:37 PM

I saw a strange beast at a gas station in Redmond, WA a couple days ago. I was filling up my Imola Red 4.8is with black 214 rims and saw an Imola Red 4.4i with black 168s head into the automatic car wash. I had a total uncanny valley experience seeing not-quite-my-ride show up out of nowhere.

Odd bit it, I didn't know the 4.4i came in Imola Red. First time I've seen that color on an E53 other than the iS models.

What kind of additives are you using, mine started smoking a little bit [emoji45]

Saw a gorgeous red 4.8is yesterday at the Whole Foods in Redmond. Made me miss my E53...

Really disappointed in the fit and finish of my new Accord. You look at it and it gets a scratch. I've had it almost a year and only have 6800 miles on it but it's starting to look best up already.
