ECS Coil Over Conversion

Bout ready to throw the towel in on my air suspension.

Has anyone tried this kit from ECS?

https://www.ecstuning.com/News/BMW_E...006/ES2770649/

I asked what would be necessary all in to convert my 4.8is to coil and they linked me to this list of parts.

https://www.ecstuning.com/Checkout/?...tent=link2cart

This is the first time I've come across the ECS kit and the price is quite nice for H&R springs and Bilstein shocks. Hopefully this helps someone else in their search.

Might have to order it up and be the test dummy if nobody else has tried it...

Sure you can do it - then you will need to get the EHC module coded out of the VO so you dont have the error glaring on your dash.

Curious on what is so wrong with your air suspension system. If your compressor works fine, air struts or bags arent leaking, and the level sensors are working fine, the module itself is the last thing that goes bad and most of them do go bad - BMW updated the part number of the module a few years after production, part # ends in 999.

mopes 12-16-2015 03:51 PM

I've rebuilt the compressor, checks out fine, airbags don't appear to leak, recalibrated via gt1 many times, replaced height sensors.

Just not reliable on a daily basis and since my wife drives our kids around in it that is unacceptable. At this point it's worth it to just toss it and go static.

Ricky Bobby 12-16-2015 03:52 PM

Then its probably the module - but no matter, I understand why you'd want to swap it out

I agree that is the next logical step. Would likely go nuts if I replaced the module and it continued.

This gets reviewed regularly and I'm probably their biggest advocate on this forum but I would just do BC (that should be in my signature). Yes its more money up front but its fully adjustable and brand new. You can sell your perfectly good suspension and recoup a lot of the difference.

I bought an X5 3.0i A month ago already converted. I am happy the PO done it.
I do not have to worry about Air suspension ever on this thing.
Do it !

I appreciate the feedback. I'm familiar with the BC coilovers but given the discussions I've had with friends in factory sponsored motorsport I will not be running them on my car.

dabenthusiast 12-16-2015 09:06 PM

I switched when I first got my x.
Air was completely unnecessary.
I got the bc racing coilovers and Ido highly recommend them.. adjustable dampening is probably my favorite besides the hight adjustability.

The EHC2 air suspension....does the same too!::confused:

Via coding.....and can revert back to normal ride height....if you decided to tow a trailer and/or motorhome.

German made damper and springs vs discount Taiwanese damper and springs. Lifetime warranty. Easy call.

Good luck with your Bilstein's. Hope you don't have existing back problems and that your truck performs great around the track.

mopes 12-17-2015 11:59 AM

We'll see how she does, can't find anyone who's tried this setup on a 4.8 yet so l'll give it a go.

I felt the same way until I had a set in my hands, installed them, and drove around on them. I'm sold for when I need a set on my X

itscoo2pyopants 12-17-2015 01:30 PM

SMOKEY53 had the bilstein b16 setup and he loved it. he's not active on these forums anymore (sold his x5), but you can still find his posts about it.

mopes 12-18-2015 06:28 PM

Went with the bilstein hd dampers and h and r sport springs. Will update after install.

itscoo2pyopants 12-18-2015 06:30 PM

do you by chance have a parts list of everything that you'll need to swap from air suspension?

mopes 12-18-2015 06:33 PM

I'll let you know after the install is complete.

mopes 01-06-2016 04:27 PM

Finished the install last night. Ride is great, smooth and controlled.

Not sure what the guy above was so troubled about but harsh and stiff are not words I would use to describe this setup. Nor would I call this anywhere near a track setup.

ECS conversion kit was incomplete as it did not include the upper strut mount bearings, spring seats, or plate which fits under the nut on the top of the front struts. See if I can dig up the part numbers. Install would have been MUCH faster if I had all the parts originally.

Great relief to have the air suspension out. Who needs some struts/shocks or a rebuilt compressor? :)

itscoo2pyopants 01-08-2016 12:39 AM

Any pics after install? Would love to see how low the drop or lack of drop.

I'm also looking for a posts list needed for the conversion

Your setup is looking sharp. So the H&R with the bilstein HD is the way to go for a good ride and great handling? From your pictures the ride height looks good. not too high and not slammed to the ground. I like the fact that you picked a quality damper to use with the system that is not too harsh.

i'm also looking for a parts* (numbers) list needed for the conversion

I'm certainly impressed thus far. Ride height should be about perfect for me once settled. The dampers are top notch with a lifetime warranty. HD are certainly the way to go over the B6 when running shorter springs.

What are the part numbers on the Bilstein HDs that you used with the H&R springs?

itscoo2pyopants 01-11-2016 07:07 PM

did you need to get strut bearings for the shock mounts?

https://dyw03owr7vs3n.cloudfront.net...21446-1c7psk7.

when you have some time, can you post up a parts list of everything you needed for the conversion?

SlickGT1 01-11-2016 10:35 PM

So what are you doing about the suspension error?

Not sure that I want to take on parting it out and all the time it will require. Looking at options now to just sell the truck as is. Will let you know if that changes. Thanks for the interest.

SlickGT1 02-11-2016 12:52 PM

Got dibs on tow hitch. Yea let us know if you are going to part it out.
