Rear hatch updated spring loaded stops
Anyone have the part numbers for the updated spring loaded bump stops?
I tried realoem but they only have one part number listed and googling for pics of it showed the standard screw-adjustable type. |

The reason realoem.com & bmwfans.info only have 1 part nbr is...that part nbr superceded all the other (older) part nbrs that were previously used. When you run into multiple or seemingly 1 part nbr...if you click on that nbr for more details...those site's will list all the bmw models that can use that nbr & why...in this case...part nbrs 51 24 7 171 557/558 (left/right) are prominently listed as superceded part nbrs that fit retrospectively. Click this link to see what I mean...this is the info realoem.com gives when you click on the one for the right side (part # 51247171558): RealOEM.com - Part Search Do note that there's 2 distinct stoppers...one for the left side & one for the right...only those 2 stoppers are used now (for each side) regardless of model year/build date. Hope this clarifies the 1 part nbr. :) |
Up, thanks for the link with pics!
Q, thanks for confirming the part # and clarifying the realoem layout! Looking at the pics on ECS those stops look pretty plain. Are those what the spring loaded stops look like? |

This is a great $60 upgrade!!! It's what the design should have been since day one, but better late than never. I did this to both of my X5s and it eliminated all noises from the back. No more adjusting every few weeks. It's spring loaded!
|
Q, thanks for verifying those are what you have and they are updated.
J, yeah, that's what I'm looking to get these for, hatch has been starting to make noise starting about a year ago. Guys, how do you get these out btw? I tried unscrewing and removing the torx bolt and I couldnt pull the stopper assembly out. |
The new stops do have a spring loaded end, I've confirmed. you can't tell from the photos.
I went ahead and ordered mine and installed them last week. You have to use a 30mm socket for the nut that holds them in the body of the car. Take off each of the rear covers in the trunk (subwoofer on the right, stereo components on the left). I loosened the plastic rear trim on each side, taking out two screws and gently pulling the rear hatch surround trim plastic away so that I could access the nuts for the hatch stops. Flatlander |
^ thanks for the visuals!
Forgot to update I already did this. It was pretty easy. Open the side compartments and reach in to the area behind the stops. They are held in place with a big nut, 30mm IIRC. A deep socket or a standard socket with a short extension and you can unfasten it through the side compartment doors. Just be careful you dont drop the nut and backing plate in the process. It's a bottomless pit down there behind those interior panels. You can also remove the weather strip and screw on the panel to give you a bit of room, but I didnt need to do that. Once the nut and rear backing plate is removed from behind, you can pull the stop out from the front. Assembly is reverse, just put the new stop in and install the backing plate and nut from behind. They are left and right specific and are oriented a certain way, it will all be self explanatory when you go at it. Oh, and yes they look exactly like the old stops but they do have a spring loaded head as explained by everyone here. |
Operation
Do they work?
|
Yep they do work for sure - pricey but worth it
|
Could this then be the reason why the past week I've been hearing a lot of rattling from the back when the music is on?

Now that the weather has gotten much colder I have picked up this rattle also. I am going to see if mine are still adjustable or have the moved into the need to be replaced ASAP category.
|
I just ordered a set. Its gotten pretty bad lately and I just couldn't take it any more.
Is there no adjustment necessary upon install? Sounds like not from what I've read. |
No adjustment, take off old and put in new.
They should be noticeably longer than the old stoppers. |
^^x2 - no adjustment just swap them out good to go
|
Where's a good place to obtain these?
|
Sweet deal.
I ordered them from FCP euro at 37 a piece. The next lowest was at BMW Fairfax at 36 a piece but $15 shipping. |
Just an FYI and maybe it was a dud - but my right side is already "blown" so to speak - it just sits at the lowest position and I can manually pull the stopper in and out, something internal must have went on this thing, I noticed it yesterday when unloading my hatch - I'll be getting a replacement since it annoys me - I'm sure the BMW parts have a 12 month warranty and I'm sure I replaced it 13 months ago but no matter -
And on the left side, the screw in the middle of the stopper rusted out super fast, compared to the right - I may just get another full set and keep the left side thats still good as a spare EDIT: I just ordered a fresh set from FCP (thanks Josh) because although my dealer gives great pricing they only were about 3 bucks cheaper apiece and I have to drive over there on Saturday mornings when I need parts, plus pay sales tax so at $74 for another pair its easy (and FCP warranties for life) Wanted to be able to take the busted one and my still good one apart to see if I can figure out why it failed on the right side so quick |
Wow that sucks. At least with FCP euro you'll never have to buy a new one again if these tend to be defective.
|
It could be worse. I did buy a big bag of assorted parts last year which included the updated stops and one of them came from the BMW warehouse and looked like it was 20 years old and in pieces - I had to exchange it back then.
All good, just in time for me to swap them out and accomplish all the little things that have been driving me crazy and/or on my to-do list, over MDW. |
Funny, I had one blow out, too.
|
^^Well you better order yours from FCP so they are warrantied for life lol - between them and the $40 trim piece above my steering wheel it was a $110 day lol

They are big improvement on the old reference! However, they dont always cure the rattling problem! They only solve the up and down trunk movement!
We found a lot of problems with missing bump stops on lower trunk lid lock ,which affect the side to side movement! The picture below is self explanatory ,so check if your bump stops are there! I cant find a reference number for these (maybe Quicksilver can help) and I didnt want to take one off a customers car :D,so I made my own:rolleyes:! |
^There are bump stops in there??
Learn something new everyday! |
Cool. How did you make them? What holds them in place?

Be creative ,use what you have ( I used a used a car roof spoiler drill template );) Important thing is not to have any sideways movement !Its adjustable ,however but be careful and always mark original position. I |

Just wish there were replacement parts for them!:dunno: |
Fernando thats great, I would never have noticed that if you didn't point them out, now I am going to check for them when I get home - anyone have any luck on RealOEM?

Thanks for sharing! |
Thank God I have both of mine LOL! I may glue them in place this weekend just to be sure they don't go missing

More reason to get a 3D scanner and printer.
|
could they possibly ahve just fallen off and ended up inside the rear hatch somewhere? take the black plastic off and see if they are inside somewhere.

so sadly that plastic "cap" over the rubber is not sold separately from BMW
it comes on the striker latch 51248120848 |
|
These are the caps. I took them out of an e46 BUT I will say they are slightly thinner than the e53 caps.
So many models of Bimmers use them. And yes I siliconed them in this time. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk |
I got lucky and I found those caps under the plastic bits in the trunk. Those combined with the new the hatch is rattle free. Hallelujah

Great post! I have to get busy this spring. Mine is rattling like crazy.
|
I just installed my new set of bumpers. These things are the bomb.
Now the hatch pops up a little bit when released. Closing the older style hatch has a definite solid feel now. I have the soft close hatch also. Not thinking need those bumpers anytime soon. For those with the SCA how do you like them? |
Just replaced my old ones with the spring loaded ones. What a difference. I have soft close as well, and while it takes more effort to shut the hatch I don't think it's enough to cause any issues with the soft close mechanism. Now if someone would just measure the length, diameter, and coil size of the hatch strut springs I could go grab some at the local Ace.
|
I do have a question about these bumpers. Mine work great, but should they be
adjusted in height? Since they compress, not sure if any adjustment is necessary |

I just thought it was funny that I was looking for the part number of the trunk stops because the right side on the 4.6 is blown...and I find my 10 year old thread asking the same thing.
