E53 3.0 diesel will not start
Hi. I have a problem, me X5 is cranking but not starting, I look at the pump in tank and it is running, I look at the pump under the floor and it is running. Tray to take the rubber hose of the fuel filter and lot of fuel is coming out. The car is in the garage and it was ok when it was driven in there, now it cranks all look ok, but it will not start. This is E53 3,0d VIN LU90073 135 KW 2003 model.
Please HELP This was a bad Christmas gift. |
Sorry to hear about it, but I feel your pain. I recently posted a thread with a very similar issue. Mine is cranking and not starting, but mine is not switching on the fuel pump relays. As soon as I can I will head to the mechanics (who have come up with no ideas) and will be checking the fuses inside the E-box where the DDE is.
I'll keep this and my thread updated with an success. Good luck and please update this when you solve it. |
Do you have INPA or something to check for errors?
My car is sometimes really hard to start, and sometimes I'm not able to start It at all. Cranks good and all like you describe. IN my case the problem is the glowplugs. These are a bit time consuming to replace, but It's doable. Get hold of some kind of scanner or get youself INPA and check for errors. My guess is your glowplugs! :) |
Hi. I was recently change the glow plug, it was wrong glow plug in the cylinder head (5Volts) (shall be 11 volts if the glow plug relay is in the computer box not on the left side of the cylinder block) I change the glow plug relay and all the glow plug, I was unlucky, two of the old ones did not com all out, so I remove the cylinder head to be able to remove the pipe that was left of the glow plug. All was OK after this, but on christmas day I was coming home, drive into the garage and he refuse to start, me garage is inside the house and that is over 20 celsius in there so no need for glow plug.

check this thread out, it is talking about the e46 but it can be used to troubleshoot your e53:

I solved mine. Check the ebox fuses.

What fuse box, one is inside the computer box under the bonet, one is inside the glow box and one is in the trunk.
|
I measure the fuel pressure after the filter 2,9 bar with just switched on and both the fuel pumps (in the tank and under the floor) was running.
|
Mine was one of the fuses inside the computer box under the bonnet.
Yours is different however, in that your pumps are turning on. Have a look for the required pressure that the pre supply pumps need before it will allow a start. I think I remember reading somewhere it was a bit higher than 2.9? That's a bit of a guess though, hopefully someone can give the actual figure for you. |
Another one I can across was tha battery. Even if it will charge up to what looks healthy, if it's slightly in bad condition, it could cause no start during cranking. The garage mine was at left the hatch opened and flattened the battery, luckily they charged it and tested it has healthy.
