Driving in snow/icey conditions without a good set of wintertires is almost the same as driving your car around in traffic, knowing that is has no brakes at all. And who in their right mind would do that?

In Sweden (just across the bridge from where i live) it is illegal to drive a vehicle without dedicated winter tires from dec. 1 to march 31.

With winter tires, when I punch it I can tell the rear end wants to step out. That is the nature of this awd, it is rear biased. I can only imagine how much worse this would be without traction tires.

I am not harping on you, but the fact that you don't know what kind of tires are on the car does not bode well. They probably are not designed for the conditions, and their current wear level is in question.

Wouldn't be because companies like Nokians, and Gislaved Tires are located in Sweden, would it???

Running Continental Cross Contact LX20 All season. This is my first winter with the X, 2 weeks ago, had a snow storm that left 6" of slushy ice. Although not the best for those conditions, I could easily inch my way around the lot without much trouble. Those trying to park. I may eventually move to dedicated season tires, but for now... these are pretty good for daily driving.

Got my wife's SUV some Goodyear Tripletred All Seasons as well, I may switch over to these once the Contis wear out.

Nokians are made in Finland, but Gislaved is indeed swedish. And even though it is not completely unlikely that Gislaveds lobbyists might have backed the idea up, the law is actually based on accident statistics, showing that winter tires can prevent a great number of accidents during wintertime.

We need serious laws here in the US like in most other countries.

Driving "summer only" tires in ice snow should be a ticket-able offense (in areas where it lasts weeks/months).

There's enough government intervention in our lives already don't need any more. There's a law against killing people, but that law hasn't stopped the killing in Chi-Raq.

That law will just be a money generator for cash strapped city like Chi-Raq. A special tax for bottle water, a special tax for soda pop, a special tax for prepared food, the highest sale tax in the country, and new for 2016 tax on streaming services like Netflix, Spotify, Amazon, etc.

At the risk of turning this into a political/philosophical thread... the general populous in the US has no respect/care for their fellow citizens. Law or not, people need to realize it is their responsibility to other road goers to maintain/equip their vehicle in a manner that allows others to travel safely as well.

Whether laws are the answer... or public floggings... I have no clue. I can guarantee you one thing though. If financial sector CEO's could go to jail for illegal leveraging, packaging, and trading... the crash of 2008 would not have occurred.

Edit: I agree with you on the taxes though... they are squeezing the lower and middle classes for everything they can. Rich pay it too obviously... it just affects them disproportionately. We pay registration on 5 vehicles which keeps going up, goods, gas (loving lower oil barrel prices currently), utilities, phone/cable services (which tax-payers subsidized to begin with), property taxes to a school district we do not use (or want to use), etc, etc. At least we don't have a state income tax... I guess I can thank the oil barons for something. :rolleyes:
