The piece that is worn on the rotor is called the slip rings and yes they can be replaced. There are starter/alternator shops that will rebuild your old alternator, provided that you live in an area that have these shops. One of the advantages of living in Chi-Raq.

^I think this is a new record for most M54 parts replaced without removing the fan/clutch/shroud assembly and while not disconnecting cooling system parts.

Nice job haha!

Wrong type of fluid. PS uses hydraulic fluid such as Dexron or Pentosin.

^I agree it will take about 20 mins to replace the clamps, snip the ends of the hoses and place new worm clamps on there and refill the PS reservoir - I just did this a month or two ago when I was changing my oil, I changed the reservoir/filter out for good measure but the hoses were in great shape, mine weren't leaking yet but it was preventative.

I do have a local shop that will rebuild the alternator for me but in this case it wasn't worth the savings to wait for that to be done. If I had another car I could drive that would be a different story.

I have a big box of oetiker clamps at my hangar so I am just going to drain the ps reservoir this weekend when I am over there and then replace those clamps. I have big aversion to worm clamps. I would have done it last night but I didn't have time to drive and grab the oetiker clamps and pliers.
