X5 cranks but won't turn over-Help!

Hey folks!
So my 2006 X5 3.0 wouldn't start on Monday. It would crank but would not turnover. I tried to jump it yesterday with no luck. I took out the battery and took it to Autozone. They verified that the battery was bad so I bought a new one and popped it in hoping I was done with this problem. Got in to start it and it's still cranking but will not turn all the way over. It almost does but then just won't turn over. Any ideas on what this could be? Is it the starter? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to maintenance on cars so any ideas/tips/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

The battery (the new one) might need to be charged fully first. If you're jump starting it, leave the leads on the correct posts for a few minutes (with the other vehicle running) to top up the battery. Any idea what the voltage is reading when you have the key in the start position?

You description/terminology of the problem is very confusing. If it cranks that to me means the engine is turning over. If it doesn't start that a different story. If the engine is turning over that mean you starter is good. If the engine doesn't starts there could be many reasons why it doesn't start.

You could have a bad fuel pump so no gas is being pumped to the injectors. Or you could have no sparks at the spark plugs which could mean a bad CPS. If it tried to start but didn't start and you continue trying to start it you could have flooded the engine. To start a flooded engine, press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and crank the engine for about 1 minute. If it doesn't start wait about 2 minutes and repeat the procedure.

I will certainly try that. I just replaced the fuel pump a year ago so I hope it's not that. I guess what I mean by "crank" is that when I turn the key, the engine is trying to start, but it never does. It just keeps trying. Does that make sense? It will almost turn over, but not fully. And if it does turnover it immediately dies. I never thought about spark plugs. Maybe that's it?

I don't have anything to read the voltage. When I mentioned I was trying to jump it, I meant the old battery not the new one. Do I need to try and jump the new one? I've not done that with prior cars when installing a new battery.

If the fuel pump was replaced a year ago by a BMW dealership, the pump and labor should still be under warranty. Sounds like it not getting any gas if it starts, but dies immediately.

I tried your suggestion of pushing the accelerator pedal all the way down and starting it. It cranked and cranked and finally started but died immediately. Also, the battery light statues on while cranking and then started to flash the closer the engine got to turning over. Fuel Pump? I hope not. The mechanic I had it at is about 3 hours away and if I can't get it started here there's no way to get it back up there.

Cranking and turning over is the same thing.

Are you saying the engine will crank, but won't start?

Or if it starts, it sputters and dies right away?

You need to report back more info: what's the fuel rail pressure when key on?

Yes that's it. It will crank but won't start. Or if it does start after cranking a long time it dies right away.
