E70 Known Issues ? Looking to upgrade ...Soon!

Hello, I'm thinking of trading in my E53 for a E70 pretty soon. I was going to fix up the E53 with a 4.8is body kit and add the style 187's ect... but wife said she would rather invest the money on a newer X5. Thinking about a 07-08 I6. Wondering what kind of problem those engines have. Also came across a 2010 X5 Diesel I6 3.0L/183 with 73,000 miles at a local dealer. Is the Diesel any good? Just looking for some feedback. Thanks

Oil Cooler gasket and oil filter housing gasket. $6 parts, 1.5 hr job. No biggie
Transfer case oil change and reset, $50/liter, 30 min job, again, no biggie.

Other than these, normal wear and tear, regular oil change, you're good to go.

Diesel would be a completely different animal. no experience. GL.

hate to state the obvious, but look in the E70 forums for a while and see what constant threads of failures you see. Read about. this e53 forum may not be as much help as going to the source

Diesel has stump pulling torque until it just falls off. It feels less responsive than my 3.0 E53 did at high speed. Having said that, I would own a diesel F15 for the long road trips. Great gas mileage. Never have liked the E70. :dunno:

The early gasoline 3.0 i6 E70's were dogs. I'd look for one with the 3.5 branding at the very least. My sister in law has the F15 3.5 and it's peppy.

Also check with some of the members on the E70 forums vs the E53

I own a 2012 E70 3.5i and an 01 E53 3.0i. The E70 is the newer "twin power turbo" N55 engine. The E70 has 32k miles and is CPO for another two years. No issues with it yet, other than needing rear brakes.

Thanks for all of the replies. Really looking forward to owning an E70. Love the exterior as well as the interior. Went to see a 2010 today in white. What a big difference from my E53. Everything looks up to date and flashier than my E53. I've got a about 2 months to decide. Really looking for a white, silver, or grey E70. Looks like it's engine is pretty reliable. Hopefully I can find one when i'm ready to pull the trigger.

If I could find it in my heart to give up the 3rd pedal, I would consider an E70 LCI 35D, with Sport Package (or whatever M-sport looking package was offered) - big fan of the diesel for sure, with a slight tune its an even torquier beast

Yeah, that would be nice. The 2010 Diesel xDrive35d I've seen online at a local dealer is nicely priced and has 73,000 miles. I'm going on Friday to take a look at it. Really want to test drive it. There's no photos online other than a stock one. Hopefully its in mint condition. I drove past the dealership on Sunday, it was covered in snow so I couldn't really take a good look at it.

Sorry, no advice on common e70 issues... not a huge fan of that chassis so never researched it.

The wife and I want a diesel F15 to replace her E83 X3. 30+mpg highway is just amazing for a truck so large. Plus it has all the new bells and whistles...

Looking to do the deal a few years out when we can get a 14 or 15 diesel w/ mtech for ~$30k ish...

There were some reports of broken rear differentials on early E70s and you are getting a vehicle that weighs 700 pounds more than the E53 without much of an accompanying increase in power from the I6. The loaners I had from the dealer never delivered fuel mileage as high as my 2002 E53. As far as going diesel is concerned, I wouldn't want one living in Chicago and coping with your cold winters. You'll be going through batteries quicker and a lot of fuel treatment that eats up any economic gains from fuel mileage. The 07-08 models also had the earlier, less user friendly versions of the I-Drive system too.

If you can, go after an 11-12 model with the turbo I6 and 8-speed transmission. The performance and fuel economy improvements are substantial, and the user forums had indicated very few major issues.

2002 X5 3.0 293,800 miles
2014 428i 14,600 miles

2004 325i sold at 123,600 miles
2001 325i sold at 66,000 miles

I thought you had to get into the F15's before you got the 8 speed trans. Might have to reconsider an e70 as that was one of our major reasons for going with the later chassis.

^LCI's (35d and 35i and higher trims) on the E70 all got the 8 Speed Auto AFAIK

BMWX5CHI 01-15-2016 01:32 AM

Going tomorrow morning to check out a few E70s. Pretty excited :D. Hopefully I find a nice one. I have on my radar a few of them with one owner. First stop is to check out the 2010 35d. Wish me luck!

35i and 50i come with 8 speed transmissions, but (very unfortunately) 35D comes to our shores with 6 speed in E70.

Ricky Bobby 01-15-2016 11:57 AM

That sucks I thought the diesels got 8-speed in the LCI

Congratulations. I have a 2007 4.8i which is very well equipped. Still have a place in my heart for my E53 4.4i. Wish the E70 had the sun glasses compartment like the E53 did.

If it makes you feel any better, the larger sunroof E53's do not have this compartment. It is one of the things I miss about my very early (10/03) 2004 X5. Facelifted but with small sunroof and nifty sunglass holder.

That's interesting to know as I was unaware of this.
