Cold weather gas leak
 

Hello everyone, I have a problem that only happens when the weather is below zero. It's currently -10 and my x5 hates it. Again this only happens below zero at one degree or higher it doesn't leak. Fuel sprays out the side of the injector from the tiny hole on each side near the top. The colder the weather the more that sprays out at -10 it sprays out 2 of the injectors at -20 it spray out 4 of the injectors.
Any idea how to fix it? Will replacing the injectors solve the prolem?
Or should I just start it and wait till it burns?

My guess, fuel injector orings shrinks so bad at low temp. Might want to check the fuel rail as well. But orings is the 1st thing & only thing comes to my mind.

The M54 injectors are known to do it when it is VERY COLD.

Read the thread by doru in E39 forum. And yes, you need 6 new injectors. Check to see if there is a good-will recall from BMW?

I think another person also posted a youtube video showing the ? crack in the injector body itself (or where the components are joined together). See the video below. Best is to ask someone to turn key to position II (fuel pump energized), no need to start engine, then look carefully at the injector body: if you see the leak as in the video, you need new injectors:

may not need injectors, just the o-rings which can be bought separately.

:iagree: If you are getting the leak down from the body joint (which is a problem on older batches of Siemens VDO injectors), it will be very easy to check - pull the rail and prime the rail, then leave a dry rag under the injectors, after about 30 mins you'll be able to see which is leaking as it will leak down - a good injector won't do that at all

It doesn't seem to be the o-ring there is a small hole on each side of the injector. It looks. Like that hole was made into it from the factory. That's where the gas is spraying out. It only does it when the temp is below zero once the temp is above zero it doesn't leak or spray.
I think this is the final straw in nickel and diming me to death. Next weekend I am going to look at a 2010 Cadillac cts with 60k on it. Monthly payments are in my price range.
To bad I JUST put new tires on it they have 45 miles on them.

What wheels / tires do you have? I can trade you a set of 19" stock 2005 4.4 rims with decent tread if yours are good looking. Throw you some cash and pay the shipping. We both win and we both know it makes no difference on trade in...

They are the stock 5 spoke there is a scratch on the inside of one of the rim from a brake caliper the tires are 255 55 18 Pirelli scorpion all season plus v rated. I honestly don't think it would be worth it on your end I don't think you really want them.

The X5 is a fine car, each new injector is $95. So roughly $600 for 6 new injectors. The other option is rebuilt injectors.

Did you ask BMW for good-will? Any recall?

Well i got some injectors from the local junkyard for $160.
Replaced all 6 injectors it was way easier then i hoped it would be. Only tools required were a 10 mm socket with 4 inch extention and wrench, small regular screw driver, and needle nose pliers.
Since I didn't look at the diy the job took me a total of 1 hour 45 mins mainly because of the cold but the torque specs on the fuel rail bolts are horribly inaccurate and one of the injectors wouldn't line up right.
Turns out if i tighten fuel rail bolts to specs 3 of the injectors leak but if i loosen them a little bit there is no problem.

Result is a non leaking x5 that runs a bit smoother.
I was planning to get rid of it right away but i may keep it till spring. Since the local junkyard has an x5 with low miles that has rearend damage and i can get most of the parts for next to nothing if i don't call and talk to the guys wife.

Had to didn't come with lower o-rings. It starts up better and runs smoother then before.
It's been running now about an hour with zero problems. I even took it into town and washed it off outside and engine compartment to get rid of the residual gas smell. Also to get the grease off the rims from the new tire install. Still some grease on one of the rims had a bit more grease on it due to a cv boot ripping and i replaced the cv axel took about 35mins.
All i got left to due is replace the hids and the passenger rear window regulator. Oh there is also two o-rings on the radiator cooling system that should be replaced since they leak about 1/8 a cup every 1500 miles.

Glad to hear it was fixed - There are also guys who sell complete cleaned/rebuilt injectors for about $15-20 each -

I might want to do that in about 3 weeks. Then it will be ok for the x5 to be down for a little while since i will have another vehicle to drive to work.
