Help! Can u solve this mystery ?

I have a friend who has a

E53 3.0D 2002

And it isn't starting! No engine light , No warning just not starting

The car wil be tomorow at my disposal for examination

My ideas

Maybe Not getting any fuel ?

Maybe Not Sparking

His Ideas

Timming chain broken

Questions

Can the chain be broken if the pulley's turning when trying to start the car ?

If yes how can I know if the chain is broken with basic tools ?

Does the e53 have relays for the fuel pump ? If yes where is it ?

How many fuse does the fuel pump have and yes where is it :)

How to know if the spark plugs getting any juce

If u have a better idea any thing is welcome

Thx

Question? Does it turn over but not fire, or not even turn over?

Forget anything to do with spark plugs - there aren't any on a diesel engine. There ARE glow plugs but they perform a different function and aren't likely to be the issue here.

Sounds like it could be a problem with the immobiliser in the key (EWS system). If the key is damaged or the EWS module fails, you'll get the "no start" situation you describe.

The fuse for the fuel pump is a 25A fuse situated in the glove box, not sure of the position number but it should be printed on the list on the fuse box lid. My 3.0D had a flat battery the other day, and when I replaced the battery this fuse was blown for some reason and the car obviously would not start. There were no warning lights, starter motor just churned endlessly without firing.

It does turn over but no ignition

it might be worth putting a diagnostic computer on the car, we have come across bmw cars were the Engine light is not on but fault codes are stored.

Yes I have thought about that but I do not have a dis or inpa system at my disposal

Any fuse or relay other than the 25a in the glove box ? ( fuel pump )

You can get the wiring diagrams for the E53 here WDS BMW Wiring Diagram System - Model Selection

You may have to fiddle with your Java security settings to get the site to work. According to their diagrams there is a fuel pump relay K96 situated behind the glove box, but I am not 100% sure that this apples to the diesel version... Good luck!

Fuel pump and starter also have relays. BMW relays are color coded. If it's the same color and pins then it should be interchangeable. I think those are both the light green type. Try switching them one by one with a horn relay (or another relay you know works)... The starter relay is in the computer box in the engine compartment. Google it for pics.
