Yup, that is mud.

That thing is sweet.

I am sure I will get flamed.....but, the X5 would be one of my last choices for "mud play," "rock play," or any off-road setting..

And you would be wrong. Few guys on here doing this with their x5s. Apparently you can make them quite capable. There are a few on YouTube. And don't forget, it's sold all over the world. These cars see a fair share of extreme conditions and do it just fine.

N S 01-28-2016 02:41 AM

I love the pic, supper cool.

I agree though, if I was going for a off road vehicle to build, I wouldn't start with the x5.

Jeeps, toyotas, rovers, all better starting points. Honestly I'd probably even take a Mercedes over the BMW for an off road build.

I bought the x5 because it's way more engaging on the road than the others listed.

jopecasa 01-28-2016 02:43 AM

Awesome!:yourock:

SlickGT1 01-28-2016 09:22 AM

Yea I agree with you guys. I personally wouldn't start with the X as well. But this makes it that much more cool.

petebmwm 01-28-2016 10:11 AM

Datails and pics please!!!

I guess that is true, if you throw a lot of money at any vehicle you can make it off road worthy...

Your rig must be differant than mine.....for the life of me I can't find how to move the transfer case to low....I must have got the non off-road package...

tylercoey 01-28-2016 11:43 AM

if you are trying to build a serious offroad machine this certainly isnt the best base im sure...

this particular one is built for one main capability - fun. and in in that respect its very very capable. tearing around with the manual transmission is an absolute blast, and id dare you not to be smiling ear to ear when behind the wheel.

preserving on-road fun wast a concern because i have this little guy to quench that thirst -

lol, Different.

I said I agree, it's not the best for off road, but still cool, and still doesn't change the fact that it is capable. Maybe not for the most hard core shit out there.

You may have missed a few threads over the years. Let me help you out there.

yep - although i dont log on often. i mostly hang in the coupe group on FB.

i co-founded/own Never Done Design House that produces a lot of Z3 goodies under our garage facet... the Z3 community is a diehard close-knit group of enthusiasts and we have been lucky enough to earn their trust with our products keeping us mainly focused on that platform.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy my X, and the OPs pic is very nice.

I am not saying it is impossible to make it capable off-road, but as others have mentioned, that's not what is was built for.....and that's a good thing.

I bought the X because of its on-road performance, IMO, it's a high-performance crossover. I have a 4Runner and and H1....both very differant and both very good off-road, as that's what they were built for. (But both slow and neither would I consider great while on-road.)

I think the X platform would be a losing battle (money wise) to convert it to a true off-road vehicle. Again, not saying it can't be done, but it's awd system is meant for performance as well as improved traction/handling on wet/snowy roads.

I don't think it comes to "having a big pair to try new shit." Just comes to common sense...adding bigger tires, a lift, and off-road lights make it look like an off-road vehicle, but those are minor items compared to the items that are really needed....

petebmwm 01-28-2016 06:58 PM

I like my truck, it gets dirty, i see alot jeeps with lift kits and huge tires and off road lights, I'm jealous of how clean they are! Just different strokes.

Looks awesome! What are the specs on your wheel tire combo? Thanks in advance..

petebmwm 01-28-2016 07:26 PM

e39 style 42 wheels, 20mm spacers and i'll have to look at the size for the tires for you.

Are you still running a -2 degree camber in the rear

petebmwm 01-28-2016 07:37 PM

265/70/17

petebmwm 01-28-2016 07:38 PM

I dialed a little out.

-skidmarks- 01-28-2016 07:52 PM

Thanks again, stock ride height? Last question... sorry to high jack OP. I haven't found alot of info on off road X5s

petebmwm 01-28-2016 08:18 PM

no, I made a lift kit, since mine has springs all around I couldnt use the fluid motor union kit for air bag trucks. it's 2'inches lift kit and another 2 from tires for 4 total.

lo_jack 02-01-2016 01:45 PM

Did you CNC spacers for the top of the shock/struts front and back?
Did you change your shocks to longer travel units? Same spring rates?

I have a high mile E53 that is begging for this.

petebmwm 02-01-2016 03:36 PM

Stock springs and bilstien hd's. I didn't cnc anything, I just made it using stuff I had in my garage, making the parts is easy, it'll take you an hour. Fitting them is a different story all together, fronts are easy, rears turned out to be a nightmare till I figured it out..... If you've ever seen how the rear coils are situated you'll know what I'm talking about!

I have R&Red a few rear springs, yes. I can see how adding 2" of anything in there could be problematic.

As these trucks go asymptotically toward value = zero and 80's fullsize 4x4 prices go exponential, I become more a fan of this concept. The xfer case is a weak point, but other people around here have found solutions....

May I ask how you wired your fog lights? Are they wired to the same switch as the stock fogs? Or do they run on a completely separate circuit & switch?

i used wire connectors and tapped straight on to the stock wires. switch and all other wiring remained factory.
