Fuel Pump repair/rebuild options

Last night I had to get towed due to a fuel pump failure on my 4.8is.
I am looking for options to get this fixed.
I can get a new pump and sensor (16116768357) for $354us and with the bad exchange rate we got now in Canada it will be around $550-$600ca with shipping and brokerage fees. I will have to throw in a fuel filter as well and I guess I will end up costing $1000ca in parts for this.

I did some research and I found the high volume pump only on ebay or other sites but not much feedback.

I wonder if anyone tried this route before and how did it go.

Subscribed.

Never knew a rebuild was an option.

You are just replacing the electric pump. You need to remove the electric pump from the rest of the assembly and install a new pump. I did this when the fuel pump on my E34 crapped out on me.

I will just spend the extra bucks and get a brand new drop in unit.

The fuel pump is secured into the plastic frame with 4 plastic tabs and you could easily break those tabs while trying to remove it.

For 4.8 it seems to require a higher volume than the 3.0 and 4.4. Realoem has a different part number and I couldn't find anything cheaper than what I mentioned above.

Run your part search through BMWfans info to identify the correcr fuel pump for your vehicle. Just get a new one and bite the bullet.

I paid $300 for a new unit locally for my 4.8 when my pump failed a few months ago. It was an OE unit, made in Germany.

I had to swap the pump individually from the entire assembly that contains the level sensor and all that but it was very simple and took all but 10 minutes.

FCP has their pump on clearance right now, $145 shipped

edit; they also have an OEM BMW fuel pump as well as the entire sender until assembly for $342 shipped :dunno:

Yes you can get the pump only, you dont need to replace the whole pump/sending unit assembly.

I put on a Pierburg pump and ok so far.

You can get an AEM high flow pump from Amazon. I heard good feedback about it. Put one on supercharged e39 540i and it performs well. If you feel comfortable to solder new plug, then it is probably cost effective alternative to OEM. Check out description on Amazon. The pictures shows pump and dimensions of the replacement pump. Looks like an easy swap. Just an idea.

That's a good find. Thanks. I couldn't find the part number for just the pump though in realoem.

I guess I can use that but I will need a sleeve or something to get it to the right external diameter or shape/lip. It doesn't seem to be the same shape with the Pierburg.
