M62 Engine removal
 

So as not to dilute one of my other threads, I wanted to see if anyone had tips on removing an M62 from a 2001 X. I need to remove mine and replace. I have seen threads where guys removed them, but I don't think I saw any actual steps on how to do it. Not looking forward to this job, but if I don't do it, I have a big lawn ornament. Any tips or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm actually going to remove mine this week or next and what I'm actually planning on doing is dropping the engine and transmission down with the subframe. Unbolt everything and just have it rest of the ground while I jack up the car. Going to use dollies to roll the subframe and suspension out from underneath. I'll keep u posted on how it goes

I pulled mine out the usual way (hydraulic lift out the front). I used the harbor freight 2 ton engine lift (it's about $170 with coupon). You need the extra reach compared to the 1-ton. Definitely remove the radiator.

Since then I've seen how easy it is to also unbolt the radiator support (beam that holds top of radiator, it is bolted in place, not welded on the X5).

You can leave the AC system sealed/alone once you unbolt the compressor from the block.

Thanks guys. I will use some of this advice. I will go up and through the engine bay. I did talk to a guy yesterday who did the whole subframe/tranny drop method. But he had a lift and that makes it much easier. I am hoping to have some time this weekend to make some progress on yanking this thing. Will take pics and post back.

Did you ever pull that engine from the bottom? How difficult was it? How did it go?:popcorn:

If I ever have to do it... unbolting the front rad support and just yanking it forward is the way to go. That's the way the guys at the shop would pull them when needed.

Out the front when my guy replaced mine...

It seems to me that I could remove engine and transmission in a couple of hours by dropping it from the bottom. I think people take it out of the front because they don't have the height or tools to go from the bottom. BMW apparently does it that was too.0.

yes...if you unbolt front subframe and front suspension from the body.

Downside....lifting aids..(not trolley jacks) need to be able to lift and drop equally on three sides.

The books all say go out the top, but don't say to remove the radiator support. Once that is out, the top/front approach is super easy.

The lifting hooks are on top. There are no official support points on the bottom, so you have to rig up something and take a little chance there.
