Blown VCG
Sitting here waiting for a tow after picking up wife/ dropping her off
She said it started to smoke so she pulled over 03 4.4 Right side bay is dirty with oil But it hit pretty high up, the washer fluid tank has oil Whaddya think ? Blown VCG |
do the CCV's lock up in the M62?
|
VCGs will leak but don't all of a sudden cause an alarming amount of smoke. Was it out the tailpipes or from under the hood? Any other symptoms?
|
Hood. Not alarming amounts but enough to see it from the grille.
She went out for lunch with coworker. Low oil came on. She text/ I reply , put the bottle that's in the trunk. About 15 minutes of driving is when the smoke appeared. While waiting for tow I poked around. Oil level looks good BUT the car was sitting in a uphill incline. Not a good base to read. |
May be coming from a loose oil filler cap or from Oil filter cap. Either leak can get on the exhaust manifold and cause the smoke. There are several other potentials but I would start there, especially if you have recently added oil, changed oil and/or filter.

I've working on a deadline that's got me working round the clock. No time to wrench until hopefully mid next week. Oil fill cap was tight when I looked. Have not checked oil level now that it's back on flat level ground.
A good majority of the washer fluid tank had slung oil and then some, around the passenger side of the bay. |
Going to fire it up.
Did not even need a top off. Can't find a lick of thing off, just short of the oil splash on the Passenger side, as high up as hitting the washer tank --- instead of oil down. The cap was tight when I got to the car, which was when she pulled over. Me still wonders, where the oil came from... |
Sort of sounds like a CCV blowing. Isn't there an adjuster motor on the back of those engine's intake manifolds that does have oil in it? I am not totally familiar, I have an N62. I think maybe your version OSV / PCV

Just came back from almost a good hrs drive.
Pulls fine. Feels fine... Note. I did a fluid check mid-Feb. Oil as always , was on the high fill mark. Never ever gotten a low oil warning since ownership. She got a LO warning, texted, her and male coworker were heading out, they topped it off with spare bottle. She was 100% sure the engine bay was clean... Started smoking a bit after a 6 mile drive....and she pulled over. Between me grabbing her and dropping her back off, then heading back to the X, there cap was tight when I checked it out. I could presume/assume oil could have splashed up the fill hole if the cap was not on, but that was not the case. Can't think of another reason why only in that area, there is oil residue and or where did the 1QT go in the span of 2K miles since last fluid check. |
Maybe said co worker put it into the coolant? Or in the washer tank.
|
Down the wrong hole???:wow:

Topped off fine, assuming check engine oil trigger was correct.
AKA, 1 bottle in the oil fill - when I look at the level, it's good... I can see potentially some oil consumption given it's age. But, literally mid Feb, oil level was on the high fill mark. Presume about 12-1500 miles were put on her since, I don't seen a qt burning up in a short period. Swapped cars today so I could see how she runs. Runs normal...... |
