DSC 4x4, Brake, and ABS Lights
Hey guys,
A few weeks ago I went and got an oil change on my 2006 x5 4.4i. Everything was fine for a day. Then when I got home the next day I noticed a series of loud audible clicks directly after I shut the car off. Did some research and was led toward hydraulic lifters? But couldn't get anything looked at immediately due to school and kids. After about a week of that I was driving the car home and while starting to go at a green light i got the DSC 4x4 inactive, Brake light, and ABD light came on all at once. These codes go away when the car is turned back on but as soon as you start driving they come back on. Also I have noticed that since the codes have been thrown the clicking noise doesn't happen when I turn the car off. If i turn it on and leave it running without driving and shut it off the clicking noise occurs. And i'm not talking about the normal exhaust caused little clicks you hear, I'm talking about louder more audible clicks coming from right around the bottom of the engine compartment. Also, at the oil change the guy was checking the tires and my Rear Passenger tire has far more increased tread wear on the inner edge of the tire. Like the inner portion of the tire is almost bald while the outer is fine. What can I do to get that fixed in a cost effective manner. As always I very much appreciate you guys for all you're help. |
You need a new gear in the transfer case actuator. Plenty of youtube video on this fix.

Second on the transfer case gear. You have classic symptoms. An easy and cheap DIY fix, too!
The tread wear is a different problem - could be simply out of alignment. Get that fixed then replace the tires. But likely it is a worn ball joint that is creating wiggle and wearing the tire. You need to get the car on a lift, release the pressure in the air suspension, and figure out what is wobbly, fix it then get new tires and an the alignment |
So I'm confident I can manage this repair myself. Trying to figure out which gear to buy on Amazon. There's one for around 80 and one for around 12 dollars. Any suggestions on which brand to go with?

This one comes with Prime shipping so you will get it quickly. Some of the non Prime gears could be shipped from China and could take a month to reach you. Prime also have free return and this one has a lot of positive review.

Hmmm... I just got all four lights today. My first thought was Battery, but reading this, I need to check this out.
It is interesting because 2 days ago I thought there was an odd "tune" being played in the drive line. It was not anything that anyone who has not been driving the vehicle for years would have recognized. OP, did this solve your problem? |
OK, I just got the TCA out. I did not have to remove or move any other parts. Just the two connectors and the 4 bolts. I will see now how hard it will be to replace the gear and get the TCA back in.
Of course my very expensive paperweight - my Bentley book is totally silent on the TCA. |
Trying to pry the plate off. So far it is impossible. I wonder if heating the whole unit will make the pate pop free. I considered just rotating the gear 180, but since I have a new one, I might as well replace it.
