Key word in your original post was "probably"--if the price is right you will probably sell it. Until you establish a price that results in---at this price I will certainly sell and get that price it is not time to let it go.
I have done considerable mods to my X5. I drove an X5M with Dinan exhaust and tune. I didn't like it enough at that time to buy it. It took a few minutes to get used to the larger size which gave a first impression as too big to handle well. Pushed pretty hard it was quite agile but there was very little tactile feedback to help read how far away I was from traction control intervening. I have done a small amount of research and I think there are mods that would correct some of that numbness.
It had the 6 speed. I noticed that first gear was very short. Would take some take some time to get used to. I will drive an 8 speed before making a decision.
I don't think it can ever feel as nimble as a 4.6-8 but the interior and technology is such that it is has some different and new features/benefits that should offset some of that.
While the 4.6-8 styling still looks current, I don't think it is timeless. In addition, I think we are at the point where the investments to keep it looking great, such as paint and interior, and feel comfortable using it for long trips don't make sense. The X5M is so different that I don't think most will know if they like an X5M as much or more than a 4.6-8 until they have driven it for several months. Personally, unless I mod it to 850HP or more and upgrade the suspension I don't think an X5M could ever be my preference. I think the same is true of most other owners of 4.6/4.8s. I think an X5M will be absolutely great as a daily driver and for trips but I wouldn't recommend selling a 4.6 or 4.8 until it is covered in dust from not being driven in 6 months.
I have been looking at X5Ms since it was introduced. When I make the purchase my 4.6 will become a garage queen for car shows and racing. I can't envision the thrill being gone.
