X5 transmission slipping
Hi All,
About a year ago, I took my 02 X5 4.6is off the road because of excessive slipping from the transmission and a very expensive repair estimate to have it fixed. I recently bought a 4.6is with a blown motor hoping to take its transmission but found out the tranny has over 300,000kms on it so most likely needs a rebuild as well (I will be taking the other parts I need and parting it out on ebay to recoup what I spent.) It got me looking though and I have since found a shop that will rebuild it for a reasonable price so it will be going in soon to get repaired. The question I had is that I seem to remember some sort of a sensor to replace (along with the rear main seal) in a "while you're in there" manner and can't seem to find the thread Can someone tell me what part that is and any other parts I should change at the same time? Thanks DF |
I guess your transmission shop will be fitting the full seal & gasket set so all the seals will be replaced anyway, and not just the rear seal?

If it ever did need replacing at a later date then it’s not a difficult job to do and can be fixed with the transmission in situ. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...turesensor.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...WiringLoom.jpg The one part you should definitely replace is the axial needle bearing between the B-clutch hub and the C-clutch drum. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...1058202016.jpg I always replace the adaptor shaft (6209/C3) bearing too, although it may not strictly be necessary. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps0da98a4a.jpg Phil |
Thanks Phil... I will relay to transmission shop

Is the shop also rebuilding the valve body? Bushings in the valve body should be replaced and the solenoids should be tested and checked.

Good question... I haven't specifically requested the valve body be rebuilt as I'm trying to keep the costs down and other than the slipping, it shifts nicely when it isn't slipping.
I'm dropping it off on Sunday and will discuss with them on Monday. DF |
Is there any way to contact RRphil

You might try to send him a message on his profile. He very well may see your inquiry here, too.
