Kids and Cargo in the X5 - Struggling
It's that time of the season.....
Just curious how do you guys haul the grocery getter around when you head out with the kids.. Got tow hitch so I'm hemming and hawing at rooftop box, or just a soft bag, rear hitch cargo box, and the plethora of options that are out there. NONE of which I'm akin on. Lookswise, I'm feeling a cargo basket, but eh, the noise and grime. Trunkwise, between a 75 Gallon Orca Coolerbox, and a Kids Wagon, we opt out leaving the stroller at home . It leaves some extra minimal space in the trunk for the personal stuff and all that jazz. Or do you guys have a Expedition as your weekend driver ;-) |
One word "Minivan".
or Two words "Mini Van". |
I could easily see how a family of 4 could quickly fill up a X5. My parents had a suburban (still do) to haul everything around.
Depending on what you are carrying I'd get a roof box |
I'm planning to get a roof box for those family camping trips away, but then we are a family of just three and we currently don't take bikes with us, just a kayak and some camping gear, etc.
Of course, the bikes could go on a tow-hitch rack, if we did decide to include them. Not keen on the idea of towing a baggage trailer though. |

Think of the roof box you could put on that thing!

It is the classic "I have two tons of kid stuff to fit in my BMW and it will not fit". I see a Minivan in your future. Just add it now to the stable of cars you own and poof problem is gone. You can pick them up cheap and you will still have your balls and yuppie status intact after you drive one. Here mine. Rescue Dog hauler, Costco runner, Home Depot, and nasty parking lot vehicle (like a National's Game in Wash DC) |
:rofl:Easy solution don't have kids

Or get something like this and don't make them the laughing stock of the school. Plus doubles as an evac vehicle when the zombie apocalypse hits.

Navigator. Car seats and equipment eat too much real estate. E53 won't cut it, except in an emergency...if you can get the car seats to fit widthwise.
That is a horrifying game of Tetris unto itself. Don't let them trick you (or your wife) into a minivan...front wheel drive, no fording ability, can't hop curbs...sounds terrible. Most of them cost close to an Expedition and get nearly as bad mileage anyway. |
Our two standard poodles and gear almost take as room as the kids used to, so unless I'm taking the boat with us, we use a hitch platform and cargo tote on the back. The roof box - the "streamlined" Thule none the less - really knocks the fuel mileage down when I use it.
2002 X5 3.0 304,150 miles 2014 428i 19,000 miles 2004 325i sold at 123,600 miles 2001 325i sold at 66,000 miles 1970 Firebird - Under restoration |
Not a fan of the hitch tray but let's talk, as I was about to look into OE rails with a Thule Box !
Doesn't help that the freaking 75 qt cooler dimensionally is almost the same as a cheap 120qt cooler. Sometime we resort to a soft bag cooler - polar bear as in means on gaining some inches :-) |

Greatest thing ever that happened !
I would never imagine I would 5 years ago, and yes, I've got season passes to Sesame Place. |
Roof cargo box works great for me. Load car with 4 people 2 sometimes 3 dogs with us... go to river or dirt roads between and under trees and it is great with pleanty of room to hold everything uptop so theres room for us with the dogs...
Only thing i forgot or wasnt thinking bout it and got stuck under a parking space overhang... Went straight under but couldnt get out without taking it off then putting it back on. That was the only time i hit something haha but it was my fault completly not a flaw with a cargo box... |

Struggling with a similar utility question....going 1 of 2 ways:
- buying a small utility trailer to tow with x5 - selling x5 and buying a truck (if I can find one at the right price) |
Come on, guys, cut JSoto some slack! I have used mine to pull a UHaul trailer to move kids, etc., apartments. If I needed regular use, I'd go for the low profile cross bars and an aerodynamic roof box [since I'm tall enough to reach it .....] and save the hitch for bike racks, etc. On the mini van issue - some funny TV ads for the Chrysler Pacifica these days featuring a very funny guy, actor/comedian Jim ?, who we have seen in comedy clubs. Can never remember his last name.

6-door ford excursion
a guy in my neighborhood has too many kids. a limo company took his F-250 super-crew 4x4, bought a crashed Excursion with the nose hammered, and put the back of the Excursion (cut off behind the drivers seat) mated to the 4 door cab of the F-250 where the bed used to be. it fits perfect. wish I had pics. so he has 3 doors on each side, plus the "4th row" seating that's stock in the back of the Excursion. it's a beast. a "6-door" excursion that looks stock.

Get some photos, PLEASE!!!! :D:D:D

Two kids here and we take the chevy volt everywhere now. Gotta learn to bring less crap with you. For trips the tray and roof should have plenty of room for you.
