Yeah, that is in part, where my post/question comes from.

Calcium Batteries have different Recharge requirements to AGM, and different to standard Wet LA Batteries.

I am guessing, for the sake of a cranking battery, the optimum 100% charge algorithm isn't so critical?

But for the RC and AH side of things, along with Battery Longevity, i image it is.
Hence i have always wondered when BMW issued a Bulletin that an AGM Battery should now be fitted when going to a Dealership, was interesting.
Does the Dealership then perhaps, reprogram some part of the BMW charging system to suit the AGM over the Calcium?

Obviously by the members posting here, they are getting good longevity out of their AGM Batteries, so looks like nothing needs to be done.

I've been running an AGM (MotoBatt) in my BMW motorcycle for about 5 or 6 years now. All good, despite the fact that in theory it is being slightly undercharged.

I pop it on an AGM charger every now and then but the charger always drops back to trickle mode after a few seconds of full charge mode, indicating that the battery is good to go.

Our 3.0i charges at 13.9V - never had a battery issue. My Bosch AGM battery specified that charging should be at or below 14.4V.

Yes, i might have got confused there
AGM have a lesser charging voltage than Calcium Batteries.

14.1V (GEL)
14.4V (AGM)
14.7V (WET)
14.7V (CALCIUM)
So..... what output does the E53 BMW X5 have?

dkl 06-20-2016 02:25 PM

13.9V on a 3.0i as previously stated. A CTEK battery tender will charge up to about 14.2V in normal mode

Ah sorry, i missed that.
Makes you wonder how the OE Calcium Battery lasts so long, with such "under charging"?

Just an FYI...the M Coupe's alternator is also outputting 13.9V and it came with an AGM from the factory. So it wasn't that much of a surprise that an AGM would operate perfectly in the X5!

Ok, thats interesting.
I guess the design and function of the Charging System and Battery is for Starting the Vehicle and secondly, running the accessories.

Its not like we are talking about a Deep Cycle Battery that needs to be topped up to 100%.

It would be interesting to remove a Battery from the Vehicle after weeks of use, then connect it to a CTEK or Similar Charger, just to see at what % it is charged and how long it took to bring the Battery to 100%.
