Nav/DSP stereo volume dramatically changes on its own

Apologize in advance if this has been covered, but I couldn't find it with my search skillz.

So the volume is changing much more dramatically than just the speed adjusted volume would normally do it. And it can change while stopped at a light waiting for it to turn green...

The change is from normal listening levels to what seems like nearly max volume, then it drops back again. Does this when listening to the radio or through the intravee (iPod) system. However, the interesting twist is that when listening through the iPod, it'll switch back to radio when it plays loud then switch back to the iPod. It's a short deal, a few seconds each time, but it is super annoying when it plays so loudly.

I just got back in town so I haven't looked at it yet (and it's 100 in the garage), so I don't have any preliminary diagnosis.

Doesn't sound like the amp though with the switch of sources too...BM54 (or whatever it is?).

Thanks for any help!

ADMRanger, I was just visiting Vegas last weekend during EDC weekend. Man was the weather beautiful.
Glad its not your A/C thats acting up and its this mystery.

funny question...how is the health of your battery AND does this music mystery only happen on hot days?

So when you're listening to radio stations the volumes spikes loudly then drops after a few seconds back to previous volume?

And when you're listening to Intravee/iPod, it will switch sources (to radio station) and Spike in volume for a few seconds THEN revert back to previous volume and source (iPod)?

it sounds like a player/hardware equipment failure to me. Not intravee related.

It has been acting up more now that it is hotter. I don't remember it happening prior to summer coming on.

Battery is an AGM monster I replaced about 4 years ago. It should be good, but I'll double check. You might be on to something as that's the infant failure timeframe for batteries here in Vegas, even good ones (e.g., factory battery on my 2011 M3 died after 5 years).

Agree, but is it the BM53 or BM54 (not sure which I have) out back or the head unit?

Thanks!

I hate to say this but I believe the actual module in the trunk, left side. The monitor up front is nothing more than that really. Its just a display for the information coming from the trunk module.

I don't think they are expensive to buy second hand.
Wonder WHY it would be acting up as you're NOT exactly in a city/area prone to heavy rainfall... unless that one time it did rain in Vegas you did have moonroof open/vented and rain got in, ran down the channels and perhaps down to radio module in trunk which is quite famous for happenning in the e53...

I have a Lear DSP amplifier that I bought and ended up not using. It's in nice shape and it works (I've plugged it in to verify). I'll let it go for what I have in it ($100 shipped) if you need one.

Thanks all. The amp is in the back left compartment (Lear DSP amp) and the BM5x is in the back middle (spare tire compartment area).

I'll suck it up and dive into this over the weekend. Garage temp right now at 735pm Pacific is a cool 98 deg F.

I see it will be higher than that over July 4 parties! I can't wait.

So I thought I'd check on the battery since it can cause all sorts of electrical gremlins. Slapped my Fluke on the charging terminals and got a voltage (that I don't remember now) that was indicating perhaps the battery wasn't fully charged.

Put the charger on overnight and decided to drive the X5 a bit since it hasn't got much use lately.

So far, no glitches on the system! I should be able to give it a more thorough test than my 12 mile commute sometime next week. A trip to the dentist today and a soak in the sun resulted in no change to the system working perfectly. I'm ever so hopeful that the battery being less than 100% charged was the issue.

I have 2 CTEK chargers in my garage and I ALWAYS connect my vehicles to them,. EVEN if I'm just gonna disconnect thewires again in 12 hours. With the alligator clips its so fast and takes a minute to put on and turn on, or to take off. AND then it gets charged while not being driven. win win. Batts never die.
My e53 batt is 11 years old and as strong as the day it started the X5 the first time.

Bad news...it did it again. Twice. On my way into work and it wasn't even that hot out yesterday morning. Poo.
