Service reset and oil drain plug torque
 

Greetings All,
I know it is on the site somewhere but can't find the instructions to reset the oil service indicator using something like key ON, trip meter etc. I have seen it here and used it before but can't find it now.

Second, the Bentley manual says 18 ft/lbs for the oil drain plug. Is this correct? Seems low. They give the same number for the oil filter housing top (this is a 3.0).

Look at the menu bar on the top of each page and you'll see a link for "how to's". From the drop down menu, choose your model and you'll find a plethora of information, including answers to your queries.
Personally, I've never used a torque wrench when tightening my oil drain plug. I use the ol' 'F.T.' method, without overdoing it too much or stripping the threads...

Huge thanks @kvc. I seem to jump directly to forums and have never used the "How to" tab. More to explore. I did confirm the oil drain plug torque spec. A post oil change leak now seems to be some old oil that overshot the drain plug opening and made it to the top of a skid plate (dripping on the change of angle) when the plug was removed.

I don't trust my torquing ability so have a couple of torque wrenches. Strangely though, the 25 Nm spec is above 1 wrench range and below the other.

Yep 18 ft lb should do it - I am due for an oil change soon myself - it might actually be 18 ft lb for the filter cap and 25 for the drain plug but don't quote me

If you're in the USA...ignore the statments about BRAKE FLUID RENEWAL...it involves the little clock face icon in the SI display...and it's not utilized on the vehicles for our market. :(

all information was useful. I will confirm that both the drain plug and the oil filter housing are 18 ft-lbs.

I ended up messing about with the reset and got it to work before I was the extra posts (was able to change to celsius as well ... have to find out how to change back).

You're right, it's 18 ft-lb for the filter cap and 25 Nm for the plug. Also 25 Nm for the filter cap and 18 ft-lb for the plug ... Yes, same torque for both = 25 Nm (spec) = 18 ft-lb (converted)

I remember when I first did an oil change and noticed it was the same torque for both = nice touch by the designers. No need to reset the torque wrench, and the torque spec is on the filter cap, as I recall.

Changing the temp scale is a common mistake when doing the cluster reset due to the first few steps being similar.

You can see how the instructions for changing the temp scale start off the same...so if you initially misstep the cluster reset...you can end up changing from Fahrenheit to Celsius or vice versa:

• press & hold trip odometer reset button while...
• turning key in ignition to position 1 (KL R), then...
• turn ignition off...then release the trip odometer reset button

If you follow the 3 steps above...not only will you change the temp scale to the opposite of what is currently being displayed...you also will keep the current trip odometer mileage without resetting it to zero. If you let go of the reset button before moving the ignition from off-to KL R-back to off...you usually end up resetting the odometer to zero. :(
